1900 Galveston Hurricane The 1900 Galveston Hurricane was one of the worst in U.S. History. It unleashed all hell on the city of Galveston, Texas on September 9, 1900. The winds were estimated at about 135 mph, making it Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

Location Its unclear how the hurricane started, due to the little availability to technology we had at end of the 19th century Hurricane Galveston was thought to have started due southeast of Florida and passed up through Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, cuba, South Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas (Galveston), much of the central U.S., Great Lakes region, and Atlantic Canada The picture above shows the storm’s complete path until it dissolved, the picture below shows the major parts of the country hit between the days of September 1st and 10th The estimated formation date was August 27, 1900. And the estimated dissipation date was September 12, 1900.

Category 4 Hurricane Galveston developed wind speeds of up to 150 mph. And sustained that speed for 1 minute. Thus making the storm a category 4 on the Saffir/Simpson scale. The picture above and to the left show the ranges of each category and their extra information such as wind speed in miles per hour, knots, pressure in millibars, and the surge in feet. The second picture, to the right, shows the location and wind speeds of the Galveston storm when it made landfall in Galveston, Texas on September 9, 1900.

Fatalities The Galveston Storm killed anywhere between 6,000 and 12,000 people and cost $20 million (1900 USD) or $516 million (2008 USD). The storm practically destroyed the city and “flattened” it to the ground.
