1. Minute in Colonial Beach History

2. The topic of our presentation is the hurricanes that have impacted us here in Colonial Beach.

3. The waters at Colonial Beach are usually calm and relaxing, but every now and then the water is anything but calm.

4. Most people find hurricanes fascinating, but the people of Colonial Beach know what it feels like to be on the other end of one.

5. Hurricane Hazel, 1954 High winds: up to 106-150 mph.
The category 4 hurricane was first spotted east of the Windward Islands on October 5th.
It made landfall near the North Carolina-South Carolina border.
It took 12 hours for the hurricane to travel up the eastern United States into south eastern Canada.
High winds: up to mph.
Hurricane Hazel, one of the worst of the season hit Colonial Beach. One of the more devastating ones that impacted us here.

7. Hurricane Camille, 1969
When Hurricane Camille started on August 14th it was categorized as a 4, but as the storm progressed it became a category 5.
It made landfall on August 17th and weakened to a tropical depression.
High winds: Coastal-near 200 mph.
Inland- 75 to 120 mph.
Rains from 12 to 20 inches.
Hurricane Camille affected this area mostly with it’s catastrophic flash flooding.

9. Hurricane Isabel, 2003
Hurricane Isabel is a topic that’s easier for us to comprehend, since most of us lived through it.
