1 1900 Tiffany Price Social Studies Period 2 Date: 9/5/09

2 Fashion In 1900 many women wore long dresses and skirts. They also wore huge hats with feathers, ribbons, bows, and artificial flowers. Occasionally some women would have complete stuffed male humming birds on there hats for the ones who could afford it.

3 Fashion Men usually wore outfits that consist of the sack coat, the waist coat (vest), and trousers. Men wore top hats to show that they were apart of the upper class.

4 Music Jazz was very popular amongst all races. Ragtime was also out in 1900 and was very popular amongst African Americans. Jazz originated in southern Louisiana.

5 Government On January 2, Secretary of State John hay announces that he has completed negotiations for the “Open Door” policy in China. On February 6, President William McKinney appoints William Howard Taft a federal circuit judge, to head the Philippine Commission to establish a civil government in the islands.

6 Technology The car was first made in 1900. Charles Seeberger redesigned Jesse Reno’s escalator and invented the modern escalator. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin invented the Zeppelin.

7 Disaster From August 27, to September 12,1900 was the time period where a hurricane hit land. The hurricane was a category 4. It hit Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, south Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas (mostly Galveston) much of central u.s., great lakes region and Atlantic Canada. The hurricane was known as “The Hurricane of 1900” and “1900 Galveston Hurricane”
