POP QUIZ What is the world’s oldest pedagogical medium …….. …… and the one least used in online education? SPEECH!

About Horizon Wimba Horizon Wimba develops web-based collaboration software for the Education sector. Formed in Jun 04 by the merger of HorizonLive and Wimba Two long standing Blackboard Building Block partners Offices in US (New York) and Europe (Sophia Antipolis) Total focus on Online Education; – Classroom Collaboration – Language Learning Approx 350 educational institutions in more than 20 countries worldwide

Elearning policy Elearning introduced four years ago. It was a gradual rollout To improve our pedagogy Started with MBA program Currently developping elearning methods and contents for all the programs of EDHEC group A brand : NETEDHEC Learning A site : 100% Management support Elearning differentiates from other Business Schools in France Edhec become a « learning organization »

The choice of BlackBoard BlackBoard Learning System ML Currently nearly 2150 students enrolled and more than 250 courses on line June 2004, EDHEC became “BlackBoard Education training center”

Learning Teams (1) A specific use of Wimba tools To create a community spirit and to facilitate exchanges between students and between teachers and students We wanted to create a more human form of contact with voice tools, for example for free online discussion The voice tools we chose were Wimba tools The decision to use new voice tools was taken for pedagogical reasons not for technogical reasons

Learning Teams (2) We started to use Wimba voice tools on our elearning platform this summer with a non-synchronised free discussion forum Actually, it was’nt very successful and the reason for that is psychological and not technological

Next experiment (1) Use of Wimba tools with another audience In France we have specialized Masters with students from companies. For one specialized Master there are courses on site one week per month Included in these courses is an English lesson

Next experiment (2) One English lesson per month is not enough. During other three weeks the students study English on line Voice contact meetings on line with their English Teacher Practical exercises Real time course with voice contact

Advantages of Voice tools Students give more information with voice tools in comparison to keyboards It’s user friendly. A teacher can listen and speak easily. He is not limited by a keyboard One criticism from the students at the end of last academic year : not enough communication space. Would like more opportunity to communicate. So we want to exploit Wimba tools Observation : with a keyboard, users communicate less. Hope : with Wimba tools, they will communicate more

Horizon Wimba & Education Horizon Wimba learning solutions enable educational institutions to fully embrace the new wave of pedagogical opportunities afforded by campus-wide networks and the internet; Technology matched to unique needs Commitment to education priorities Fostering a global community
