FMTV COOLING SYSTEMS 4/23/2017

Terminal Learning Objective ACTION: Identify the location, description and function of cooling system components on an FMTV CONDITION: In a contemporary operating environment. Utilizing classroom instruction, multimedia slide show, and appropriate technical manuals. The student will locate, identify and describe the function or each cooling system component. STANDARD: Student will be able to identify, describe and inspect components of cooling system on a FMTV . Upon completion of this task, you will receive a 10 multiple question practical exercise in which you have to complete in 10 min. and more score a minimum of 70% to pass.

ELO A ACTION: Discuss the location, description and function of cooling system components on an FMTV. CONDITIONS: In a contemporary operating environment. Utilizing classroom instruction, multimedia slide show and appropriate technical manuals. STANDARD: IAW TM 9-2320-366-20-1, Para 1-13. The student will able to understand and identify major components of the FMTV cooling system.

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE FMTV COOLING SYSTEM Radiator Water Pump Engine Fan and Pneumatic Fan Clutch Thermostat and Housing Radiator Pressure Cap Water temperature switch (The cooling system is a pressurized system that protects the engine, transmission and air compressor of the vehicle .)

RADIATOR Radiator Radiator Located behind the charged air cooler, coolant flows through it and the fan forces air through the fins to carry heat away from the coolant

WATER PUMP Water Pump Water Pump AS SEEN FROM ABOVE AS SEEN FROM BELOW Centrifugal water pump is on the right side of the engine and driven by a V belt.

ENGINE FAN AND PNEUMATIC FAN CLUTCH Activated by the water temperature sensor. Air pressure is removed from the fan clutch and the engine fan is engaged

THERMOSTAT AND HOUSING Thermostat Housing Thermostat Remains closed until the coolant temperature reaches 180°, it is fully open once the temperature reaches 199°.

RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP Radiator Pressure Cap In combination with ethylene glycol antifreeze, the boiling point is raised well above 212.

Water Temperature Switch Temp. Switch Detects high temperature conditions and engages the fan clutch by removing air pressure

CHECK ON LEARNING What is the purpose of the cooling system? It is a pressurized system that protects the engine, transmission, and the air compressor by providing a means of dissipating heat generated during operation of the vehicle. At what temperature is the thermostat fully open? 199 degrees F (93 degrees C).

CHECK ON LEARNING - False True or False: Coolant is added to the system at the radiator? - False How does the water temperature switch function? - Detects high temperature conditions and removes the air to engage the fan clutch

Enabling Learning Objective B ACTION: Demonstrate proper way to identify and inspect components of the FMTV Cooling System. CONDITIONS: In a contemporary operating environment, utilizing FMTV cooling system parts, student’s handout, TM 9-2320-366-20-1 Para 1-13, and TMDE. STANDARD: IAW TM 9-2320-366-20-1 Properly identifies, test and inspect major components of the FMTV cooling system.

CHECK ON LEARNING What are we looking for when inspecting the fan blades? Inspect for cracked blades, bent blades, missing blades, all mountings hole are serviceable, and the front of the fan is clearly marked to ensure proper installation. How the water temperature switch work? The water temperature switch activates the engine fan. When using the radiator pressure cap tester, what is the pressure used to test the radiator cap for leaks? 13 PSI

SUMMARY Demonstrate proper way to identify and inspect components of the FMTV Cooling System.

Enabling Learning objective C ACTION: Properly identify, describe and inspect the components of the FMTV cooling system. CONDITION: In a contemporary operational environment, utilizing FMTV cooling system parts, students handout, TM 9_2320-366-20-1 Para 1-13, TMDE, and Practical Exercise. STANDARD: The student will receive a 10 question Practical Exercise in which you have 10 min. to complete and must score a minimum of 70% to pass, and correctly identify and inspect 2 out of 3 FMTV cooling system components to receive a go.

CHECK ON LEARNING WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE COOLING SYSTEM? It’s a pressurized system that protects the engine, transmission, and the air compressor by providing means of dissipating heat generated during operation of the vehicle. What temperature does the radiator pressure cap raise the boiling point of the coolant level to in combination with the ethylene glycol-based antifreeze? Well above 212 degrees F.

CHECK ON LEARNING At what temperature is the thermostat is fully open? 199 degrees F What activates the engine fan with pneumatic fan clutch? The water temperature switch. What happens when the water temperature switch detects a high engine temperature condition? Air pressure is removed from the fan clutch and the engine fan is engage.

SUMMARY Identify the location, description and function of cooling system components on an FMTV . Discuss the location, description and function of cooling system components on an FMTV. Demonstrate proper way to identify and inspect components of the FMTV Cooling System
