1 The Engine Cooling System
Cooling System Functions: Remove excess heat Control engine temperatures Control combustion Protect the engine 33% - Horsepower 30% - Exhaust 7% - Radiation 30% - Cooling System Overview: The water pump circulates coolant through the engine block and heads. The coolant picks up heat from combustion as it flows through the passages. When the coolant reaches the thermostat set point temperature, it opens diverting hot coolant to the radiator, and closes when the coolant becomes too cool. In the radiator, the coolant transfers heat to the radiator fins and to the atmosphere. The radiator cap is a critical component to maintain cooling system pressure and a high boiling point for the coolant.

2 Antifreeze / Engine Coolant Functions
Provide effective heat transfer properties Protect against freeze-up damage Protect against boil-over damage Protect system metals against all forms of corrosion Cooling System Metals Types of Corrosion Iron and gray cast iron General corrosion Steel Cavitation pitting Aluminum and aluminum alloys Erosion corrosion Copper and brass alloys Galvanic – electrolysis Solder and solder alloys Crevice – scale corrosion

3 An Antifreeze / Engine Coolant Contains:
Ethylene Glycol (MEG) Quality Water + Corrosion inhibitor Freeze Protection Heat Transfer Corrosion Protection Boil Over Protection
