Using Adjectives as Nouns Realidades 2

Adjectives to Nouns When you are comparing two similar things, you can avoid repetition by dropping the noun and using an article with an adjective.

Adjectives to Nouns Look at how we can avoid repeating the noun in these instances:

Adjectives to Nouns ¿Cuál prefieres, la sudadera apretada o la floja? La sudadera  f, s (la) la  definite article, comes before adjective Which do you prefer, the tight sweatshirt or the loose one?

Adjectives to Nouns To avoid repetition we drop the noun in the second part of the sentence, then...

Adjectives to Nouns...put the definite or indefinite article right before the second adjective.

Adjectives to Nouns ¿Cuál prefieres, los pantalones claros o los oscuros? Los pantalones  m, pl. (los) los  definite article, comes before the adjective Which do you prefer, the light pants or the dark ones?

Adjectives to Nouns ¿ Te duele la pierna derecha o la izquierda? ¿ Qué prefieres, un gorro azul o uno amarillo?

Adjectives to Nouns Note that the adjective must agree in gender and number just as if the noun were still there.

Adjectives to Nouns Also note that un becomes uno(a) when it is not followed by a noun.

Adjectives to Nouns We can do the same thing with what we call a “prepositional phrase,” or a description that begins with de.

Adjectives to Nouns ¿Compraste una chaqueta de lana o una de cuero? Una chaqueta  f, s (una) Una  Indefinite Article, comes before de Did you buy a wool jacket or a leather one?

Compré la de lana. I bought the wool one. La  definite article, comes before de.

Adjectives to Nouns ¿ Qué haces, la tarea de matemáticas o la de ciencias?
