States of Matter

What three things are made of matter? Solids, liquids, gases

What is mass? What is it measured in? A measure of the amount of matter in an object. Kilograms

What is volume? What is it measured in? A measure of how much space an object takes up. Milliliters (mL)

What can you use to measure the volume of a liquid? (3 Answers) Graduated cylinder, beaker, measuring cup

How do you measure the volume of a solid? Length X Width X Height Displacement

Mass and Volume= Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space What two vocabulary words can be used to describe what matter is? Explain. Mass and Volume= Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space

A force of gravity between Earth and an object What is weight? A force of gravity between Earth and an object

What measurement is used to measure weight? pounds

What is the same as pounds? One newton=0.22 pounds 4.45 newton=1 pound

What is the force of pull when dealing with weight? gravity

What does an object’s weight depend on? Location in the universe

Mass=Same Weight=Different What stays the same as the astronauts go from Earth to the moon? What changes? Mass=Same Weight=Different

How does the astronaut’s weight on the Moon compare with the astronaut’s weight on Earth? Weigh less on the Moon

What are the two properties of matter? Mass and Volume

A measure of how tightly packed the matter is in an object. What is density? A measure of how tightly packed the matter is in an object.

How do you calculate density? Mass divided by Volume Ex: Mass 2g Volume 2mL 2 divided by 2= 1 g per mL

What does high density mean? Also, draw a picture. Many particles are tightly packed in a given area.

What does low density mean? Also, draw a picture. A few particles fill the same amount of space.

What type of particles tend to be tightly packed together? solids

What type of particles tend to spread apart? Liquids or gases

List gas, solid, and liquid in order from most dense to the lease dense? Solid, liquid, gas

Why is water special? Solid water, ice, is less dense than liquid water. The particles in ice are more spread out than the particles in liquid water.

What determines an object’s ability to sink or float? density

What word describes an object’s ability to float? buoyancy

When will an object sink? When they are more dense than water.

Allow energy to flow through them easily What does conduct mean? Allow energy to flow through them easily

What does insulate mean? Do not allow energy to pass through

What type of items conduct energy? Metals

What should cooking pots and pans have on them and why? Wooden and ceramic handles so you do not get burnt

Why are metals good conductors? They conduct heat and electricity very well

What does the plastic on the wire help with? Works as an insulator around the wire

Name some items that are insulators.

What does magnetic mean? The push or pull on objects.

What two ends of a magnet attract? What two repel? Attract= Positive and Negative Repel= Positive and Positive Negative and Negative

Have very low density and great strength What are aerogels? Have very low density and great strength Used to insulate windows

What are the four properties of matter? Density Buoyancy Conductivity Magnetism

Mass=Same Weight=Less on Moon If a rock was taken from Earth to the Moon, how would its mass and weight be affected? Mass=Same Weight=Less on Moon

What are the three states of matter? Solids, liquids, gases

What can change substances into different states of matter? Adding or removing heat

Draw a picture of a solid, liquid, and gas?

Eventually separate and become liquid When a solid has particles than begin moving faster and faster, what is going to happen to the solid? Eventually separate and become liquid

When a liquid has particles that being to move faster and faster, what is going to happen to the liquid? Become gas

What is melting point? solid to liquid

Changes from a liquid to a gas What is boiling point? Changes from a liquid to a gas

What does condenses mean? Turns from gas to a liquid

What does freeze mean? Liquid to a solid

What is another word for melting point? Freezing point

How is evaporation different from boiling? Evaporation=Gradual change from liquid to gas Boiling=Rapid change when heat is added

What are the properties of solids? Retain (Keep) their shape Same volume Not a fluid

What are the properties of liquids? Settle to the bottom of container Definite volume A fluid

What are the properties of gases? No definite volume Takes the shape of container A fluid

To spread out when items get hotter What is expansion? To spread out when items get hotter

To shrink when items cool What is contraction? To shrink when items cool

How does a thermometer use expansion and contraction? The liquid in a thermometer expand when temperature rise, and contract when temperature decrease.

Give another example of expansion in every day life? You write down some examples!

Give another example of contraction in every day life? You write down some examples!
