Physical Properties Does it Matter?

Magnetism Matter that contains iron, nickel, cobalt, or steel will be attracted to a magnet. Not all metals are attracted to a magnet.

Physical State Matter can exist in three forms, or physical states: liquid, solid, or gas. Matter can change from one physical state to another by the processes of melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation. Temperature changes can affect changes in state.

Mass Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
Mass is measured with a balance. Mass is not the same as weight. Weight is a measurement of the pull of gravity on an object. Weight is measured with a scale.

Relative Density Sinking & Floating
Weight doesn’t determine if an object will sink or float. The volume of an object and how much “stuff” (matter) is in the object will determine the density.

Solubility in Water Solubility refers to the ability of a substance to dissolve when added to water. A liquid, solid, or gas can be dissolved in water. Examples may include lemon juice in water, sugar in tea, and the carbonation in a soda.

Conduction Some materials allow thermal (heat) energy or electrical energy to flow through them easily. These materials are called conductors.

Insulation Some materials do not allow thermal (heat) energy or electrical energy to flow through them easily. These materials are called insulators.

Does it Matter? Matter has properties that can be observed and measured. These properties determine how matter is: Classified Changed Used
