symptoms There are not to many symptoms to ewing sarcoma One may be pain or swelling in an arm, leg, chest, or back. Limited range of motion A fever for no known reason And a bone breaking for no apparent reason Can cause a child to become very tired and also loose weight Redness Many illnesses have the same symptoms of sarcoma so a lot of times it is missed at early stages

How common is it? This is the second most common bone cancer But this cancer is mainly only know to children, it is very rare for an adult to be diagnosed with it. Accounts for 3% of all childhood cancers There are approximately 200 new cases reported annually 1 of every 50,000 children will become diagnosed with sarcoma

Causes? This disease may not be transmitted nor is it genetic Typically found in long bones such as arms, legs, or chest and back a change occurs in a cell to move a gene called EWS on chromosome number 22 next to a section of DNA on one of several other chromosomes that causes the EWS gene to turn on.

treatments? Ewing sarcoma can be treated 50 to 75% of the time depending on how early the disease is found. Treatment almost always starts with chemo-therapy to destroy the tumor cells and prevent the cancer from spreading. The purpose of chemo therapy is to stunt the growth of the tumor Chemotherapy may last from 6 to 12 months while radiation last 5 to 8 weeks Surgery , and radiation or a combination of both are used along with chemo-therapy. The 5-year cure rate for localized Ewing sarcoma is 70 to 80 percent Most of the time this will end with a surgery and the recovery is the same of any other surgery, the patient will stay hospitalized for a few day then go home and rest for a week

Treatments (cont.) Chemo therapy- unlike most chemo therapy treatments that kill all cells this treatment specifically targets cancer cells and doctors try to save all healthy cells Radiation therapy- this therapy uses targeted energy to kill cancer cells, shrink tumors, and provide relief to cancerous symptoms. Radiation can be used before, during, and after chemo therapy treatment. Radiation therapy can be used for many types of cancers and illnesses

Interesting facts? Sarcoma can only be confirmed with a biopsy. This disease can be classified as either localized Ewing tumor or metastatic Ewing tumor Males are more prone to the disease than females This disease develops between the ages 10 to 20 Mostly only affects Caucasians
