PSSA Coach 11 th Grade Reading Curriculum Integration

Chapters One and Two Use pgs ( pre-fixes, suffixes and root words) as supplemental vocabulary decoding activities. Vocabulary in context activities support current in-context activities in Sadlier book. Good review tools for beginning of school year.

Chapter Three Topic sentence and supporting details activities are perfect warm-up before the first Criterion prompt. Works as reminder before any type of essay writing, using examples from current piece of literature that the class is reading to follow-up (i.e. If you are writing a paragraph analyzing Abigail’s role in the scene we just read in The Crucible- what kind of topic sentence could we write? What would our supporting details be?).

Chapters Four and Five Making inferences Drawing conclusions Identifying author bias/ persuasive wording Fact vs. opinion Identifying central idea in text Analyzing viewpoints All can be used as introductory or supplemental activities to any text in our curriculum and/or a persuasive writing lesson.

Chapter Six Text organization/Thesis Statement  Effective introductory tools to discuss thesis statements before one of the Criterion prompts or a refresher before the class begins working on their literary research paper.

Chapter Seven Figurative language Simile Metaphor Personification Hyperbole Use with poetry unit or supplemental poetry readings during literature units.

Chapter Eight Imagery and Irony  Incorporate into literature unit. Example: I recently used the irony definitions and activities to pull apart chapter seven in The Great Gatsby. Pgs.  Then we discussed imagery and identified examples in Gatsby and then students completed activity from book (we went over as a class).

Chapters Nine and Ten Analyzing point of view, author’s voice, tone and style. These activities are the perfect complement to the Norton Anthology essays.  Elements of Fiction This is what I cover with my short story unit anyway- reinforcing activities.

Chapter Eleven Analyzing dialogue, characterization and symbolism. Again, works hand-in-hand with short story unit and in class story analysis activities.

Chapter 12 Drama and Poetry- use as supplement to Streetcar, Othello, Crucible.

Chapter 13 and 14  Effective sentence construction  Grammar  Speaks for itself- can be supplemental to writing activities throughout the year.

Important Reminder- Do not use pre-tests that are in beginning of book. They are going to be used as benchmarks by the department.
