Ss. Colman-John Neumann 2005/2006 Basketball Survey May 2006

Athletic Board Purpose From the Athletic Board’s Constitution: The purpose of the Athletic Board is to foster the physical, moral and emotional growth of youngsters who are members of either St. Colman or St. John Neumann Parish and/or attend SCJN School by establishing a program of sports which stress: 1.The concept of Christian principles 2.Respect for just authority and for one’s peers 3.Individual conditioning and effort 4.Knowledge of fundamentals, sportsmanship, teamwork and 5.Reinforcing a positive self-image for all children It is the responsibility of the Athletic Board to set a tone for the programs that stress participation and individual responsibility.

At the end of the basketball season, a mostly close-ended survey was mailed to every parent who had a child in the basketball program. The response rate (completed surveys returned) was 33% (n=30) with a representative cross section of responses as follows: –Boys 57% / Girls 43% –A team 53% / B Team 47% –JV 53% / Varsity 47% Every team was represented % distribution of total responses by team Boys JV Boys Varsity Girls JV Girls Varsity A13.3% B16.7%13.3%10%6.7%

Parents rated their child’s overall experience as very positive with an average score of 2.19 ExcellentDisappointment 3.3%13.3%10%26.7% % Distribution of responses B teams had better experiences than A teams The boys teams had better experiences than the girls teams Q1.) Please evaluate your child’s overall experience this year? 3.3%

Learning “teamwork” and “sportsmanship” are the attributes parents felt are the most important Most Important Least Important There was no difference in importance rating between boys and girls. “A” teams rated Being Competitive significantly higher than “B” teams and “B” teams rated Fun higher than “A” Teams Q2.) What attributes are important to you and your child in a basketball program?

Being “competitive” was rated the weakest attribute of the basketball program Achieved Did not achieve Q3.) How did the SCJN basketball program rate against these attributes?

Being “Competitive”, “Social Outlet”, and “Physical Activity” were the only attributes that performed to parent’s expectations… Building “Self-esteem” and learning “Teamwork” and “Sportsmanship” are the attributes that underperformed expectations the most

Quotes from Survey Describe what your child enjoyed the most about the program: –Great year, fair coaching –Working as a team with his classmates –Playing basketball. The coaches were nice –Everyone got to play –The life as well as basketball lessons brought to the court –Being with friends. The practices were fun and he got to play basketball & wasn’t on the bench during the game. –The coaches were very supportive of all the players –My child enjoyed seeing his skills improve…liked being part of the team –Working together as a team –Learning different defenses and pressing full and half court –My child enjoyed the opportunity to play basketball –The coaches gave her the confidence to play as a team –The practices were fun –Coaches made it fun....they learned plays and developed good skills –Learning the game –The games and the coaches were positive and very nice –Getting better at the sport

Quotes from Survey What one improvement should be made for next year: –Board needs to discuss “A” vs. “B” concept….all players should get to play some of every game –Unfair treatment given to son of assistant coach…had a negative effect.. –Bigger gym –I would like to suggest a minimum playing time for A team players –Keep grades together as a team –More on skills practice –Better communication with parents –More games –Nothing –We were happy with the program –The coaches should decide what is best for the team, not a few certain girls –Make the boys share the ball with all the players

The performance of the coaches was seen as positive by the parents. Always Displayed Never Displayed 6.6% 6.7%16.7% % Positive Attitude 73.3% 13.3%6.7% Fairness with playing time Good understanding of the game 60% 16.7% 10% 6.7% Of the 3 coaching attributes measured, fairness with playing time attributed the most to enhancing a child’s overall experienced followed by a positive attitude then a good understanding of the game. Q4.) Did the coach display? 3.3%

Most parents felt their child’s team improved during the season and that the number of games played was about right 83% of parents felt their child’s team improved during the year The number of games played: –73.3% of parents felt the number of games was about right –23.3% felt too few games were played –3.3% felt too many games were played Q5.) Did the team improve during the year? Q6.) Was the number of games: about right, to many, to few?

Conclusions Based on the “overall experience” rating of this year’s participants, the current basketball program structure appears to be working and in alignment with the athletic board’s mission. Comparison of “attribute” importance and how the program measured against them shows improvement is needed in just about all areas. Of all the program “attributes” measured, being “competitive” was the least important attribute to the parents AND was 1 of the 2 attributes the program met expectations. Of the 3 coaching attributes measured, fairness with playing time attributed the most to a child’s overall positive experience. The basketball program is not “broken” but needs improvement!
