NFHS-3, India, Topics  Infant and child mortality  Treatment of childhood diseases  Child immunizations

NFHS-3, India, Infant Mortality Rates Per 1,000 live births

Early Childhood Mortality Rates More than half of deaths to children who die in the first five years of life occur in the first month after birth Per 1,000

NFHS-3, India, Steady Decline in Infant Mortality Rates Per 1,000 live births

NFHS-3, India, Infant Mortality Rates by State Per 1,000 live births

NFHS-3, India, Childhood Mortality Rates by Sex Per 1,000

NFHS-3, India, Infant Mortality Rates by Demographic Characteristics Per 1,000 live births

NFHS-3, India, Infant Mortality Rates by Wealth Per 1,000 live births

NFHS-3, India, Perinatal Mortality Rates by Residence Per 1,000 pregnancies of 7 or more months duration

NFHS-3, India, Topics  Infant and child mortality  Treatment of childhood diseases  Child immunizations

NFHS-3, India, Treatment of Childhood Diseases Percentage of children with childhood diseases taken to a health facility or provider  Diarrhoea: 60 percent  Acute respiratory infection (ARI): 69 percent  Fever: 71 percent

NFHS-3, India, Treatment of Diarrhoea  39% of children under age 5 with diarrhoea in the two weeks before the survey received some kind of oral rehydration therapy  26% were treated with a solution prepared from oral rehydration salt (ORS) packets and 20% received gruel  More than one-quarter did not receive any kind of treatment  16% received antibiotics, which are not normally recommended for treating childhood diarrhoea

NFHS-3, India, Knowledge of ORS Packets Nearly three-quarters of women know about ORS packets (up from 43% in NFHS-1 and 62% in NFHS-2). Nearly three-quarters of women know about ORS packets (up from 43% in NFHS-1 and 62% in NFHS-2). However, use of ORS is low and virtually unchanged since NFHS-2. However, use of ORS is low and virtually unchanged since NFHS-2.

NFHS-3, India, Trends in Treatment of Childhood Diarrhoea with ORS Percentage of children age 0-3 with diarrhoea in the past 2 weeks

NFHS-3, India, State Percent Using ORS Highest use MeghalayaTripura Himachal Pradesh GoaMizoram Lowest use Uttar Pradesh AssamRajasthanNagalandJharkhand Highest and Lowest Use of ORS Percentage of children age five with diarrhoea in the past 2 weeks

NFHS-3, India, Feeding Practices during Diarrhoea  Children with diarrhoea should be given more liquids to drink than usual, but only 10% of children with diarrhoea actually receive more liquids and almost 4 in 10 receive less to drink  Children with diarrhoea should continue to be fed, but 45% receive less food than usual or no food at all when they have diarrhoea

NFHS-3, India, Topics  Infant and child mortality  Treatment of childhood diseases  Child immunizations

NFHS-3, India, Trends in Immunizations by Vaccine

NFHS-3, India, Drop-outs Are a Problem for Polio and DPT Vaccine

NFHS-3, India, Full Vaccination  Only 44% of children age months are fully vaccinated (only a slight increase in coverage from 42% in NFHS-2)  Between NFHS-2 and NFHS-3, full vaccination coverage for children increased in 19 of the 29 states and dropped in the remaining 10 states

Percent of children age months Full Immunization of Children

Percent of children age months Full Immunization of Children

NFHS-3, India, Summary of Vaccination Coverage  Almost all children age months (95%) receive at least some of the recommended vaccinations  Vaccination coverage against vaccine- preventable diseases has been improving for all recommended vaccinations EXCEPT DPT  Vaccination coverage is highest for BCG and three doses of polio vaccine, but nearly one- quarter of children have not received these vaccinations

NFHS-3, India, Summary of Vaccination Coverage  Drop-outs between the first and third doses of DPT and polio vaccine are a substantial problem  Less than half of children age months are fully vaccinated  Vaccination coverage has improved in most states, but there has been a notable decrease in vaccination coverage in several states
