Chapter IV Holidays and Festivals

I. Ways to spend holidays  The favorite way is at seaside to swim and bathe for enjoyment.  Another place is the amusement park or funfair with modern machines and devices which can give you a thrill.  Few English people rent houses of flats but to stay in a boardinghouse.  Some may spend holidays abroad.

II. Public holidays in Britain Bank and public holidays vary in the UK.  In England and Wales: eight  In Scotland: eight  In Northern Ireland: ten

III. Festivals in Britain 1. Christmas OOn December 25, the greatest of the Christian festivals, commemorating the birth of Jesus. IIt is a home and family festival. EEveryone is buying Christmas presents for friends and relations. TThe home is decorated: Christmas tree, shining ornaments, coloured lights and gifts.

 In the evening, the family have a sumptuous dinner.  Children sing Christmas carols.  Father Christmas, Santa Claus, gives presents to children.  Some may watch TV, or play games or simply talk; some may go to the theater.

2. Boxing Day: the day after Christmas (Dec.26th) 3. Easter: chief Christian festival in spring Children get Easter eggs. 4. Good Friday: the crucifixion of Jesus. 5. Easter Sunday: the resurrection 6. Easter Monday: a public holiday 7. New Year’s Day: more important than Christmas to Scots. People stay up late at a party to see the New Year in.

8. Guy Fawkes’ Day: to celebrate a historical event on Nov. 5 th. 9. April Fool’s Day 10. birthday: personal festival 11. Remembrance Day: Armistice Day An important patriotic festival on November 11 th to remember the millions of people died in the two World Wars.
