Lesson 13

 Is a family that practices skills that promote loving, and responsible relationships. Understanding Roles:  Parents teach children behaviors and skills such as effective communication, values, self-respect, resolve conflicts  Grandparents reinforce behaviors and skills taught by parents

 Learning to respect authority- Authority is power and right to apply laws and rules.  The most essential lesson a child can learn is to respect authority. Respecting authority means an individual understands their role. Doesn’t mean you have to like what the person of authority is saying, but should recognize their value.

 Learn to accept situation make adjustments through responsible decision making model.

 Harmful Relationships: harms self-respect, interferes with productivity, or includes violence (verbal or physical)/drug use.

1. People Pleaser- constantly seeks the approval of others (willing to use drugs to be liked by the individual) 2. Enabler- supports harmful behavior, denies behavior is wrong (tells self that the individual would only hit me that one time) 3. Clinger- person feels empty inside and is dependent on attention even it’s negative 4. Fixer- tried to fix other peoples problems and allows them to not focus on their problems 5. Distancer- emotionally unavailable can’t have a healthful relationship because they won’t risk involvement in relationships.

6. Controller- A person that is possessive, jealous, and domineering. Has to control everything and reacts harshly if that doesn’t occur. 7. Center- A person where everything is about them. Sabotages their relationships because they don’t show enough interest in the other person. The individual is self and only thinks of what benefits them. 8. Abuser- The individual physically or verbally abuses people. Physical abuse hitting, shoving, etc. verbal name calling, uses negative terms to describe spouse or partner. 9. Liar- A person lies and deceives the spouse or partner. The spouse and partner make decisions based on false information 10. Promise Breaker- Individual doesn’t keep their word. The spouse or partner can’t build trust or sincerity with the person.

1. Evaluate relationship regularly  List items that worry you about your relationship 2. Recognize when you should end the relationship  Individual practices an illegal behavior  A trust worthy person brings something to your attention about your partner or spouse 3. Identify Items that could change to make the relationship better 4. Talk to a parent/guardian about the changes that you would like to see occur 5. Have frank/stern discussion with partner or spouse 6. Set future date for evaluating relationship

 Intervention- occurs when family and/or friends gather together with a trained therapist to tell a person their feelings about their behavior and suggest treatment  Therapy- therapist teach families how to make healthier choices when expressing feelings and relation to others  Recovery Program- group that supports a person as they change their behavior
