2 SELF-ESTEEM Self-Esteem: a person’s belief about his/her worth.
Positive – is a person’s belief that (s)he is worthy and deserves respect. Negative – is a person’s belief that (s)he is not worthy and does not deserve respect. Our self-esteem can be shaped by our environment.

3 EVALUATE OWN BELIEFS It is important to always tell the truth
Sometimes it is best to lie It is important to consider others before acting I must always protect my interests It is important to follow all rules Some rules were made to be broken It is important to respect authority No one can tell me what to do I take responsibility for my actions Others influence my choices and I use them for reasons for my actions

4 SELF-RESPECT Do you respect yourself? Do you respect others?
Pay attention to your appearance Mentally decide what is important to you and keep reviewing them Being okay with being alone at times Express your feelings Spend time with your family Care for other people the way you would want them to care for you

5 CHARACTER To posses good character your actions must reflect responsible values. To improve self-esteem your belief statements must be responsible. Make a character check to determine if your actions reflect your beliefs Control the messages you are sending yourself Make choices that positively influence your self- respect

6 HEALTHY MIND We all face challenges, and some face more than others.
How you respond determines the health of your mind. Some personality characteristics can keep you afloat when things go bad. Some characteristics can pull you down into addiction and codependence

8 ADDICTIONS Some personalities have addictive tendencies.
Addiction: is the compelling need to take a drug or engage in a specific behavior. Addictions are used to avoid problems, disengage, avoid boredom Sometimes addictions are created from healthy/normal behaviors

9 CHARACTERISTICS OF AT RISK TEENS
Depressed Constantly seeking others approval Negative self-esteem Need to control Unmet needs Poor coping skills Feelings of guilt or ashamed Difficulty with authority Living in a fantasy world Feeling empty Traumatic childhoods Unable to delay gratification Feeling tense or anxious Lonely Difficulty expressing feelings Deny personal problems Trouble with anger Tendency to blame others when something goes wrong

10 ADDICTIONS AND HEALTH STATUS
An addiction can harm your physical health Drugs/alcohol/exercise can harm physical capabilities An addiction can jeopardize safety Drugs/alcohol can change a way a person thinks Lead to fights, car crashes, thrill seeking An addiction can harm relationships Teens only focus on that drug or behavior Neglect relationships

Illegal drugs, lose scholarships, jobs, jail time An addiction can cause financial problems Shopping, gambling addiction – debt Fines

12 ADDICTIONS – 5 Signs Have a compelling need to engage in a behavior
Engaging in a behavior instead of dealing with feeling of anxiety, depression, boredom or loneliness Feeling bad about oneself after taking a drug or engaging in a behavior Engaging in the behavior even when there are negative consequences Trying to stop but not being able to.

13 CODEPENDENCE Some people become involved with addicts and they want to rescue and fix their problems Codependence: is a mental disorder in which a person denies feelings and begins to cope in harmful ways. Tend to want to rescue and control another person Tend to be Enablers Enabler is a person who supports the harmful behavior

14 COMMON CHARACTERISTICS
Deny feelings Focus on fixing other people’s problems Try to control other people Feel responsible for what other people say or do Seek the approval of others Have difficulty having fun Have difficulty having others take care of them Try to protect others Do not meet their own needs Avoid living their own lives by concentrating on others

15 RECOVERY CODEPENDENCY
Support groups: for both codependents and addicts Need to develop a better sense of self Learn to share their feelings Learn to stay focused on solving their own problems Allow others to be responsible for their own lives Use honest talk to confront people
