The History of Newcastle... Crime and Punishment

Unfortunately, crimes of all descriptions have been carried out for many, many years and are not something new in any city. As a result there has always had to be appropriate forms of punishment to match the crime committed. Which crimes do you think people carried out in past centuries? How do you think criminals in the past were punished?

So many questions. So many possible answers. But how could we actually find out about the history of crime and punishment in Newcastle? Who could help us? Where could we look? What could we read?
