Atoms

ATOMS Atoms are building blocks. Atoms are so tiny they can’t be seen, even with the most powerful microscope. An Atom is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. When atoms combine together they form molecules. ATOMS Picture Caption Here

In Ancient Greece a man named Democritus figured out that every single thing in the universe must be made up of tiny particles that can’t be cut anymore. He called these particles “atoms”, which in Greek means “uncuttable”. There are over 100 different kinds of atoms. Even though protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of an atom, most of the nucleus is empty space.

Nucleus Structure of the Atom The nucleus is made up of the protons and neutrons. The electrons spin in orbit around the outside of the nucleus. The nucleus is the center of the atom. The nucleus was discovered in 1911, but its parts were not identified until 1932.

Proton A proton is a particle that a positive electric charge. It is a subatomic particle. The proton is located at the center of the atom in the nucleus. To give you an idea how small a proton is, if an atom was the size of a football stadium, then a proton would still be smaller than a marble

Electrons Orbits the nucleus of the atom Has a negative (-) electric charge The number of electrons in an atom of an element is always equal to the number of protons. Electrons are arranged around the nucleus of atoms in regions called electron clouds or electron orbits. Electrons are much smaller than neutrons and protons. About 1800 times smaller!

Neutrons Found in the nucleus of the atom Has no electrical charge Weighs the same as a proton The neutron was discovered in 1932 by the English physicist James Chadwick

More on the Atom The number of electrons and the number of protons is equal. The number may or may not be the same as the number of neutrons within that atom. Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter that make up everyday objects. A desk, the air and even YOU are made up of atoms!!! Atoms join together to form molecules.

Atom Review Questions What is the center of an atom called? True or false? An electron carries a positive charge. What orbits the nucleus of an atom? True or false? A neutron has no electric charge. True or false? A proton carries a positive charge.
