VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS at BENNIE DOVER JACKSON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Home of the Tigers Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School is located in the heart of New London, CT. Serving students in grades six through eight, BDJMS offers a variety of curricular and extra curricular opportunities for students to engage in throughout the academic school year.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS Mentoring Tutoring AVID Classroom Support One on one student support (In Classroom) General Education students struggling Special Education students struggling English Language Learners struggling

What does a volunteer do? Be a Friend “provide Support” Be a Role Model “Share a Hobby” Teach a Skill “Learn a Craft” Play a Game* Read* Laugh Inspire a young Leader* Care When? How Long? How much time? Mid-September to Mid June 1 Hour per week- equivalent to 24 hours per year (there are 8766 hours in a year–.27% of your year) Why? Kids need Our Support! Help prepare the students today to be leaders for tomorrow! This is Our Future!

MENTORING Become a resource for a child. Build a relationship on trust, safety, and commitment. Meetings are once a week for roughly one hour. You can talk share hobbies work on goal setting Walk play games the options are endless!!!! Mentors should be outgoing, willing to take risks, and able to make a one year commitment to the child they are matched with (if you are matched during the year, you need to commit to your mentee through the end of the school year).

AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID is a nationally recognized program that promotes college awareness and preparedness. During tutorials, students work to understand challenging questions from their academic courses. AVID tutors assist students in small study group style learning. Facilitating peer leadership Inquiry higher level thinking skills

CLASSROOM SUPPORT Build a relationship with a teacher at BDJMS Build relationships with many students Work with the teacher to define your role Roles may include working with: individual students small groups of students Setting up classroom activities Be a ROMAN and roam the room

ONE on ONE Student Support In the classroom You will be matched with a teacher at BDJMS and you will be matched with a specific child within the classroom. Allows you to assist a specific student when they need it the most- as they are learning. Be a valuable resource for a child you will be able to assist them as they work through a challenge immediate intervention when the child needs it the most
