10 Rigor is the goal of helping students develop the capacity to understand content that is complex, ambiguous, provocative, and personally or emotionally challenging. Taking rigorous courses opens doors! Source: Teaching What Matters Most; Standards and Strategies for Raising Student Achievement by Strong, Silver and Perini, ASCD, 2001.

11 AVID strategies such as Socratic Seminars Cornell Notes Inquiry Cubes Tutorials (Peer Tutoring) allow students to drill deeper into the understanding of the subject matter and not just skip across the surface of learning. WICR strategies are rooted in rigor to push student understanding to a new level and produce thinkers, not just information reciters.
