Problem 1 The ratio of mystery books to fiction books in the school library is 2 to 3. If the librarian found 120 fiction books on her inventory, how many mystery books will she find?

Solve! Solve the proportion to find the missing quantity. x 40 X = 80

Problem 2 Apples are on sale 3 for 60 cents, but Kelly needs to buy 5 apples for her lunches this week. How much would Kelly pay for 5 apples?

Solve! Since there is no number that we can multiply 3 by to get 5, we can cross multiply and solve the equation. 3x = 5(.60) 3x = x = 1.00

Problem 7 The principal is buying sandwiches for the teachers. For every 9 sandwiches he buys, he receives one free. How many sandwiches will the principal need to buy to get 4 free sandwiches?

Problem 8 There are two counselors for every 21 children at summer camp. If this year’s camp has 63 children registered, how many counselors will they need?

Problem 9 A Navy sailor is allowed 7 days of shore leave for every 30 days he or she is at sea. If a sailor spent 75 days at sea on assignment in the Pacific Ocean, how many days of shore leave will the sailor receive when he returns?

Problem 10 When the chef makes salad dressing, he mixes three parts vinegar to five parts oil. If the chef has a bottle containing 15 ounces of vinegar, how much oil will the chef need to mix up his salad dressing.

Problem 11 The ratio of baseball cards to football cards in Juan’s collection is 5 to 6. Juan now has 57 football cards. How many baseball cards does Juan have in his collection?
