INTRODUCTION  It is a didactic unit based on the life cycle of a frog.  It includes some Arts and Crafts activities and has been planned to be implemented in English during Science sessions through the methodology of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning).  Remember that the language is a means to an end. It will be taken into account when evaluating the unit.  Advantages: effective, work-focused, motivating, multiple intelligences involved.

FROM THE EGG TO THE FROG: A METAMORPHOSIS Level: 2 nd graders. Term: 2 nd. Length of unit: 7 lessons. Contents: Our unit is based on the life cycle of a frog. Final task: a song performance, a presentation about the life cycle of a frog and a presentation on what a frog eats. Areas involved: English, Science and Arts & Crafts.

AIMS To develop children’s awareness of the life cycle of a frog. To observe and describe each stage of the metamorphosis. To be familiar with what a frog eats.

MATERIALS Tadpoles. Observation sheet. Frog, insect, log and pool puppets. Insect flashcards and miniflashcards. Frog wheel. Song: The Five Speckled Frogs Video: The Life Cycle of a Frog Crayons, felt-tip pens, scissors and glue. Card. Self-assessment worksheet. Assessment grid.

LESSON 1 1.The teacher introduces the topic by saying: I went to the pond and I found some tadpoles. Do you want to see them? The teacher brings the tadpoles into the classroom. We will base our observation upon our tadpoles. 2.The teacher elicits previous knowledge to form sentences and writes them on the blackboard: Example:It’s a tadpole. It’s black. It’s got a long tail. It’s got a big head. 3.Observation sheet: this chart contains eight days and the teacher will ask the children to fill in the first day. 4.Predicting what will happen the following day.

LESSON 2 1. Observation sheet: Draw and write what they see. Fill in the second day. 2. The teacher introduces the song with the log, frog, insect and pool puppets Listen and perform the song. 4. What do frogs eat? Elicit from kids. 5. Show flashcards of insects. Listen and repeat the names of the insects. Play games with flashcards: memory games (What’s missing…) 6. Students start the insect craft: colour the insects and cut out the frog. Give instructions. Ask students to colour the insects according to the flashcards.insectsfrog

LESSON 3 1. Listen, sing and perform the song We will ask the students to role play the song. One student will be the log, a group of students will hold hands pretending to be a pool, five students will be the frogs and a group of 5 students will be bugs. Repeat the activity changing roles. 3. Observation sheet. Draw and write the changes they see and fill in the third day. 4. Finish insect craft. 5.Listen to the song and perform it with the insect craft.

LESSON 4 1. Revise the song. Sing it with up to 10 frogs. 2. Observation sheet. Draw and write the changes they see and fill in the fourth day. 3. Students revise and explain what frogs eat. Students prepare the miniflashcards and play TPR, memory games in pairs.

LESSON 5 1. Revise the song. 2. Observation sheet. Draw and write the changes they see and fill in the fifth day. 3. Watch the video The Life Cycle of a Frog. Students explain what they have seen with teacher guidance. Watch the video again pausing and letting students explain the process Put the pictures to do the frog wheel in order.frog wheel 5. Correct the sequencing and stick the pictures on the wheel. Elaborate the wheel.

LESSON 6 1. Observation sheet. Draw and write the changes they see and fill in the sixth day. 2. In groups prepare the final task: song performance, life cycle of a frog and frog food. They will present those activities in front of other students (e.g. in front of 1 st grade pupils). 3. Early finishers can prepare a frog poster from egg to frog.
