Delivering An Effective Presentation

Objectives 1.To share information and experiences on presentation delivery. 2.To recognize, address and deal with fear of public speaking. 3.To offer alternatives for preparation. 4.To present audience with better ways to an efficient presentation.

Effective Presentation is Successful Public Speaking. Why do we present? You (the speaker), Your deliberation (the presentation) and Your audience (the listener/ target group) Introduction

Prior to Accepting Speaking Assignment Ask yourself…. 1.Have I earned the right to talk about this subject? 2.Do I care? 3.Am I eager or willing to share this information? * “Secrets of Power Presentations” by Micki Holliday

Preparation -Do you have stage freight/fear of public speaking?

Preparation -Do you know the purpose of your presentation? -Do you know your subject well? -Do you know who are your listeners/audiences? -Most importantly; KNOW YOUSELF.

Preparation Reducing fear of public speaking:- 1. Focus on communicating your message. 2. Look at the audience. 3. Don’t be defensive. 4. Be comfortable with your self. 5. Speak up! 6. Gesture naturally. 7. Arrive early! 8. Have your presentation ready.

Preparation Understand the purpose of your presentation. Background of the seminar/training. Importance of your topic. Believe and be interested. Don’t accept a speaking assignment you don’t have adequate time to prepare.

Preparation Know your subject. 1. Seek information effectively. 2. Have an outline. 3. Cite your information. 4. Use supporting materials. 5. Research your topic well. 6. AVOID Plagiarism.

Preparation Audience Profile: is this important? 1. Audience survey. 2. Text and presentation acc. to your audience profile. 3. Method/s best to explain your message. 4. Visual aids most easily understood. 5. Audience expectation.

Facilitating Audience Interest 1. You are the key person. 2. Text, VA, Presentation determine audiences’ interest lasting or fading away. 3. Involved your audience. 4. Help your audience understand better. 5. Do not loose your audience.

Speaker’s Credibility Why YOU? What have you experienced or learned that has earned you, the right to speak? 1. Credibility is ‘earn’. 2. Credibility is knowledge. 3. Credibility is experience. 4. Credibility is reliability.

Delivering your presentation 1.Eye contact binds you and your audience - don’t hide behind a podium. 2.Stay calm, confidence, speak up - not too fast and not too slow.

Delivering your presentation 3. Do not read to your audience - save details for handouts. 4.Some speakers show unconscious physical manifestation of nervousness – avoid this. 5. Use current and credible sources. 6.Be enthusiastic. 7.Visual aids to generate interest / enhance message.

Delivering your presentation 5.Do not loose track of the time. 9.Let yourself be heard. 10.Pay attention to your audience. 11.Manage and control your presentation.

The use of Visual, Verbal and Vocal in a Presentation Visual :- 1.Know your ‘base’, get familiarize with logistics. 2.Dress for the occasion. 3.Aware of your non-verbal communication. 4.Audience loose interest if they cannot see you or your presentation. 5. Acknowledge your audience. 6. Establish and maintain eye contact throughout the presentation.

The use of Visual, Verbal and Vocal in a Presentation Verbal :- 1. Uniqueness in using language. - do not patronized. - do not use too much jargons/terms. - do not use slang/street language. 2. Be energetic. - use words in a conversational manner. - use strong, high impact words.

The use of Visual, Verbal and Vocal in a Presentation Vocal :- 1. Speak in a calm, slow pace rate. 2.Watch the tone of your voice. 3.Be comfortable. 4.Do not over do it. 5.Let your audience hear you. 6.Energetic, avoid monotonous presentation. 7.Deliver with confidence and credibility.

Handling Interruptions 1.Ignore them. 2.Discourage them. 3.Address the interruption. 4.Use assertive comments “I can see there are some excellent comments from the audience, would you please share your thought with us?” 5.Deal with it.

Conclusion 1. As important as your opening. 2. An indication of the end of your talk. 3. Summarize all your points 4. Use key words, brief and simple sentence. 5. Reinforce your central ideas, make an impact!

Question and Answer 1.Pay attention to the question. 2.Paraphrase the question. 3.Answer briefly. 4.Answer as much question. 5.Be fair. 6.Be honest. 7.Deal with ‘problematic’, ‘overenthusiastic’ participant. 8.Maintain credibility.

Common sources of self-destruction. 1.Expert overload. 2.Reading vs. communicating. 3.Lack of audience control. 4.Credibility issues. 5.Information overload. 6.Apologizing.

Qualities of a Skillful Presenter 1.Self control. 2.Know the subject. 3.Awareness of people, time and place. 4.Decisiveness. 5.Enthusiasm. 6.Flexibility. 7.Directness.

In conclusion The psychology of winning in delivering a presentation is to deliver effectively and efficiently, keeping in mind to be; 1.Well Prepared. 2.Be confident. 3.Credible. 4.Remain in control. 5.Key word :- “YOU, YOUR DELIBERATION and THE AUDIENCE”
