Developing Guidance Notes for Safer School Construction Image:

Kyrgyzstan earthquake - October 6, 2008 – Magnitude 6.6 In the village of Nura, 75 died, approximately 150 injured According to the Kyrgyz Emergency Ministry, virtually all the buildings collapsed (100 buildings) Two buildings which remained standing were the school and the clinic These were designed and constructed by the Kyrgyz Scientific Research and Design Institute of Seismic Construction

What is included in the guidance notes? 1)A set of suggested steps 2)Basic design requirements 3)References to resources An evolving document including:

How are the guidance notes organized? Introduction Suggested steps Identifying partners Forming a working group Prioritizing Conducting Assessments Identifying codes and standards Designing Partnering with building industry Basic design requirements

Introduction How safe are your schools? Impacts of disasters on education sector Why safer schools are needed Challenges Guiding principles Scope and usage of the guidance notes
