THE ROMAN REPUBLIC 1. The first Romans were farmers who lived in central Italy. 2. After the first Romans, the Etruscans took over and taught the Roman about art, government, and engineering. 3. Julius Caesar hoped to bring much needed political reform to Rome.

THE IMPERIAL AGE 4. The time of Roman Peace is called the “Pax Romana”. 5. Many cultures lost their independence as they became part of the empire and their resources were sent to feed the city of Rome’s insatiable demands for luxury goods and crops.

THE SLOW DECLINE 6. Rome began to rot from within because the leaders were ineffectice. 7. Constantine was the first Christian emperor. 8. The last Roman emperor was Romulus Augustulus. 9. The Roman Empire grew weaker and poorer, and the German tribes swept down through Rome.

PATRICIANS 10. The patricians are the highest of the social classes. 11. Patricians lived in luxury, ran the government, meet with clients of lower status for favors, and spent money on festivals and games. 12. Plebians were the lowest of the social class. 13. Insulae are tiny apartments in huge buildings that were six stories tall. They were not as comfortable as apartments today.

SLAVES 14. Slaves had to mine for gold, teach the young, and do paperwork. 15. Some people became slaves because they were just poor and had no other choice. 16. Some slaves earned their master’s loyalty and were freed which they could then become Roman citizens. 17. Some slaves were branded or forced to wear iron collars with tags. Slaves who rebelled would be crucified by the side of the road.

SOLDIERS 18. Soldiers built roads, bridges, and aqueducts. The military also helped guarantee law and order in captured provinces. 19. Life for an ordinary soldier was tough. They would serve for as many as 25 years and would have to be away from their farms and families for years at a time. 20. Soldiers benefited by traveling to see new parts of the world, share treasures captures in war, and served the world’s most powerful nation.
