The MobileAssistant project

Projectinformation HURO/1001/283/2.3.1 MobileAssistant - Cross border academic development of an image-based recommendation system for regional educational purposes (MobileAssistant – Képfeldolgozáson alapuló ajánlórendszer kifejlesztése határon átnyúló akadémiai együttműködés keretében regionális oktatási célokra) 2

Summary Partners: Debreceni Egyetem, Informatikai Kar, HU Polytechnica University of Timisoara, RO The project aims to strengthen the education process of both universities by an extensive exchange of know-how in the field of mobile technologies and augmented reality. The outcome of the project is expected to be a software based on image processing and data mining techniques, which can be used for education in several ways. This partnership includes both joint research and bilateral educational work: the first augmented reality enviroment will be developed in the border region, using the expertise of both universities and involving students into the development of the system. The participating students have the opportunity to learn to work in groups using state-of-the-art development tools. By taking shared seminars, the students can also benefit from the knowledge gained from the other side's experts. The developed system can also be beneficial for several institutions of both sides (arts, natural sciences, architecture, etc.). 3

Summary Joint research of the University of Debrecen and the Politechnica University of Timisoara (HURO) The first augmented reality enviroment will be developed in the border region. The participating students have the opportunity to learn to work in groups using state-of-the-art development tools. –Benefits from the knowledge gained from the other side's experts. Joint educational efforts.

Partnership Debreceni Egyetem (University of Debrecen) –Take advantage in digital image processing and database/data mining applications. –Project works for students. Politechnica University of Timisoara –Responsible with the analysis, design, implementation and testing of mobile application layer of the proposed service. –Flexible architecture for user friendly interface. –Energy efficient image retrieval and data mining for the proposed service.

Added value of the project The proposed project aims to use joint research efforts between Timisoara and Debrecen in order to see: –How new mobile technologies can be used to improve the education process? –First in high-level education and next in medium-level education. The main result of our common research is expected to be an augmented reality tool based on high-level image recognition techniques that can be used by students as an assistant. The added value of our research is to introduce the concept of smart mobile assistant in education.

Project implementation 12 interested and talented students is composed –Selection procedure from the 120 ones attending the parallel courses at both the partners –The lectures/labs will be held by the experts, and also the selected students will be supervised by them The implementation of the system considers the following three major components: –Developing/implementing image processing algorithms, –Developing/implementing mobile application, –Developing/implementing data mining applications
