RFID  What is it?  How does it work?  Is it reliable?

How RFID works  Traditional way that RFID works is simple  There is a small tag on a device or a person produces a radio wave.  This radio wave is noted by a network of receivers which are located around the hospitals.  Software takes hold of positioning data and places the locations on a table or map. The location can also be put into a hospital information system.

Two components of RFID  A tag and reader  Most tags contain an antenna which is attached to a microchip. This contains a short identification number.  Tags can be either passive or active  Active tags contain a battery which a long life of several years  Passive tags use reader emissions which allows the power of a brief response

Healthcare systems using RFID In Davenport Iowa RFID active tags are being used to track infusion pipes as well as stretchers and wheelchairs. Many hospitals are waiting for prices to drop Representitives of industry estimate that around 200 hospitals are using this radio wave-based technology The early users limited their RFID applications to operating rooms or small programs on one floor

Advantages  Faster way of accessing data  Storage of patients medical, and personal history, able to follow up on them  Able to locate patients, drugs, equipment  Track patients heartbeat, and locate blood samples  Identify sealed packages, without them being open.  Safer than medical papers, help identify appropriate drugs to be given to patients, when drugs were accessed, and expiration  Differentiate between fake products  Saves up to $300,000 a year, and requires less security, as everyone or thing is being tracked

Disadvantages  People applying for jobs, with past medical issues, it is unable for them to start over.  Privacy invaded (Allows 3 rd parties to manage, store, access information)  Costly to cover large amount of areas  Data can easily be breached, can be changed, information misplaced, removed.  Unaware of all the information is transferred to and from.

Quality and Efficiency  Waste Reduction  Rapid access to information  Error reduction  Requires less amount of maintenance

Spy tags  There are some developing RFID standards which include:  Password protection for identifying tags  Capability of reader to erase all tag data

Security & Privacy  Individual access is exposed  Risk of Identity Theft  Data mismanagement (incomplete, missing, out of date  Dehumanizing, less guards required  People or animals are able to be tracked by any reader
