Statistics  More than 50 STD’s  1 out of every 4 teens will get an STD at some point in their life  4 STD’s can be fatal  12 million new cases of STD’s reported each year  2/3 of new cases in teens/young adults  Some will not be prevented by condoms

Concerns  High rate of occurrence  Causes infertility  Causes cancer  Birth Defects/Newborn problems  No immunity – can be cured and then re-infected  If untreated – fatal  Costly – health care over a billion dollars

Reached Epidemic Stage  Sexual intercourse at a young age  More sexual partners  Not taking precautions – teens invincible  Not seeking medical treatment – continue to infect others – sometimes no symptoms

Ways to Avoid  Abstinence - Only sure way to protect oneself from acquiring an STD Sexual Fidelity - Medical checkup - Monogamous relationship Precautions - Latex condoms – physical barrier - Only takes one contact - Always a chance of failure – 15 – 30% fail No Drug Use - Transferred by blood to blood - Contaminated needles - Lower Inhibitions
