World Water Forum Presentation – Istanbul - March 2009 – © via-marina via-marina and its submariver ® system: Inter Basin Water Transfers using an underwater flexible pipe Water, via-marina: life!

World Water Forum Presentation – Istanbul - March 2009 – © via-marina An ever-increasing demand Water is a necessary condition for development. Increase of population (3BN more) increases water demand both directly and indirectly (i.e. demand for foodstuff) Agriculture (2/3 or 3/4 of worldwide water consumption – 40M new ha of irrigation=8000m 3 /s) Resources ill-distributed Strong need to increase water resource locally, particularly in coastal areas (2/3 population) at an affordable price ! (e.g. agriculture requires water at a cost smaller than 0.5$/m 3)

World Water Forum Presentation – Istanbul - March 2009 – © via-marina Insufficient or costly solutions Desalination: high cost (  1$/m 3 ) and high energy consumption (>3 kWh/m 3 ) for relatively limited quantities (1-2m 3 /s) Inter-basin water transfers: limited applications difficult to implement Transportation by tanker: high cost (>2$/m 3 ) and limited quantity (1m 3 /s ~ 1 tanker of 100,000 t/day)

World Water Forum Presentation – Istanbul - March 2009 – © via-marina submariver®: A New Solution

World Water Forum Presentation – Istanbul - March 2009 – © via-marina Reuse Transport farther away outfall of treatment plants If no local demand for reuse Caution: potential usage vs. quality of treated water Turning the ecological constraint into a productive investment Obtaining a social and economic return Diminish water price for first users

World Water Forum Presentation – Istanbul - March 2009 – © via-marina Advantages of submariver ® Large quantities / long distances / long term Fast implementation and construction Low energy consumption hence more environmentally friendly and less sensitive Transportation price (amortization included) allows agricultural uses beyond normal human consumption Simple and sturdy, low maintenance No waste, no chemicals, no technological dependance

World Water Forum Presentation – Istanbul - March 2009 – © via-marina Ready to Develop First Project Proof of concept established: –>25 pre-feasibility studies under discussion –Preliminary studies under way Technical studies achieved (past R&D>2M€): –Suppliers and co-contractors identified –Prototype and laboratory tests soon under way NGOs and Administrations have shown high interest and proven acceptance of our solution. Award winner of Tremplin 2007 (co-organized by French Senate and Parisian business school ESSEC)
