Life in The 1960s

John Margaret

How does technology at the time compare with now?

In the 1960s, we saw some of the greatest advances in technology of any single decade. In the home, televisions became larger in the 60s and colour was introduced. The “space race” began between America and Russia. Yuri Gagarin went into space and Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.

Did any events change social values in the 1960s?

Before the 1960s, pregnancies involving unmarried women were frowned upon by society. With the invention of the contraceptive pill, the risk of becoming pregnant was eliminated and society became very promiscuous.

Can you recall a key event of the decade?

One of the most important events of the 1960s was the Vietnam War, and in Britain, people were beginning to see lots of horrific pictures and videos from Vietnam, a lot of which were very disturbing.
