2. Sputnik 1
On October 4, 1957, Russia announced the landmark launch of a small satellite into orbit around the earth,named Sputnik.

3. The first beening in space
Less than a month later Russia sent a second satellite, Sputnik 2, into space carrying a dog named "Laika".

4. The first man in space
On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person ever in space. He orbited the Earth once, reaching a maximum altitude of 203 miles.

Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space (16 – 19 June 1963 – Vostok 6) and the youngest, having only 26 years.

6. The first disaster with casualties
On 23 april 1967, Soyuz 1 was lunched and one day later it crashed at the landing, having Vladimir Komarov onboard.
