Infinitive There are 3 groups of REGULAR verbs in French: verbs ending with -ER = 1st group verbs ending with -IR = 2nd group verbs ending with -RE = 3rd.

Pronouns are also used for things  il is used to replace a masculine noun  le livre - il  elle is used to replace a feminine noun  la chaise - elle  ils is used to replace a group of masculine nouns  les écouteurs - ils  elles is used to replace a group of feminine nouns  les gommes - elles

Use il, elle, ils, or elles for the pictures you see

tu vs. vous  Use tu with :  a friend  a peer  a family member  a pet  a child  Use vous with :  a teacher  an adult you don’t know  two or more friends  a group of people

Tu or Vous?

Verbs  Verbs are action words.  In French, new verbs are given in the infinitive.  The infinitive is the base form of the verb  It has the word “to” in the definition

To conjugate regular –er verbs in the present tense  1. Take off the infinitive ending (-er) danser  2. Find the stem (whatever is left after taking off the infinitive ending) danser  3. Add the correct ending to match the subject je – e tu – es il/elle/on – e nous – ons vous – ez ils/elles -ent

 The only endings that are pronounced are –ons and –ez.  The other endings are silent.

Other –er verbs  habiter – to live  changer – to change  payer = to pay  dîner – to have dinner  trouver – to find  porter- to wear  passer – to show (a movie)  visiter – to visit  penser – to think  dessiner – to draw  entrer – to enter  donner – to give  travailler – to work  voyager- to travel

Verbs that end in -ger  Keep the ‘e’ on before adding the –ons ONLY for nous  Nous nageons.  Nous mangeons.

Verbs that end in -yer  Change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ in everything but nous and vous  je paie  tu paies  il / elle / on paie  nous payons  vous payez  ils / elles paient

To make a sentence negative  Add ne before the conjugated verb and pas after  Je ne danse pas.  Tu ne chantes pas bien.  Nous ne parlons pas espagnol.

 Change ne to n’ before a vowel  Je n’aime pas chanter.  Claire n’étudie pas beaucoup.  Vous n’écoutez pas le jazz?

 Je vais au…= I go to…..  Je suis de …= I am in …… grade.

Entrée le 10 novembre  Translate the following sentences into French.  1. I play tennis.  2. We are not watching a movie.  3. Marc likes to sing.  4. Do you (familiar) eat pizza?  5. Claire and Paul do not dance.

Indefinite articles in the negative When a sentence becomes negative, replace the indefinite articles with de or d’. J’ai un stylo. Je n’ai pas de stylo. Tu as un ordinateur? Non, je n’ai pas d’ordinateur.

 Tu as des crayons?  Non, je n’ai pas de crayons.
