CORRECT!!!

INCORRECT!

EXTENSION QUESTIONS  What is the pleural membrane & what is its job?  What is another name for the trachea?  We breathe about 16 times a minute & use about 0.5 litres of oxygen per breath. How might this change during high intensity exercise?  What is pulmonary respiration? ANSWERS

EXAM QUESTIONS 1. What is meant by external respiration?(2 marks) 2. Give 1 reason why breathing rate increases during physical activity. (1 mark) 3. Give 2 reasons why the body needs oxygen.(2 marks) 4. Give 3 changes occurring in the respiratory system as a result of exercise. (3 marks) 5. What is an oxygen debt & when is it likely to occur?(3 marks) 6. What is vital capacity?(1 mark) 7. What is the effect of vital capacity on performance?(3 marks) 8. What is VO2 maximum & why is it important in sport & physical activity? (3 marks) 9. Name 3 parts of the respiratory system.(3 marks) ANSWERS

EXTENSION ANSWERS  They are double skins which are slippery & keep the lungs moist. They lubricate the lung exterior so the membranes can slide against each other as the lungs expand & contract to reduce friction.  The windpipe.  We may breathe up to 50 times a minute & up to 2.5 litres of oxygen per breath.  Pulmonary respiration is where oxygen moves in & out of the lungs, carbon dioxide is breathed out & oxygen is moved into the blood stream.

EXAM ANSWERS 1. Breathing oxygen into the lungs & removing carbon dioxide by breathing out. 2. Increased demand for oxygen by the working muscles. 3. To live, to break down food into energy for work. 4. Increased tidal volume, increased minute volume, increased depth of breathing & increased number of breaths. 5. When the body is not getting enough oxygen to work so it works without oxygen until it is available. This will occur during the first 3 minutes of exercise & as we reach maximal heart rate. The oxygen debt is the extra oxygen we have to breathe in on top of what we would normally to bring the body back to normal equilibrium. 6. The total amount of oxygen a person can accommodate. 7. A high vital capacity means good aerobic fitness whereas a low one means poor stamina as we would get out of breath quickly & maximum heart rate would be reached more quickly as oxygen demand can’t be met. 8. Vo2 maximum is also called vital capacity. A high VO2 maximum means good aerobic fitness whereas a low one means poor stamina as we would get out of breath quickly & maximum heart rate would be reached more quickly as oxygen demand can’t be met. 9. Lungs, bronchus, bronchioles, alveoli, diaphragm, trachea.
