Function: to get oxygen to your cells

3 Main Organ: lungs

4 We inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide
breathe in exhale - breathe out

5 Oxygen - the gas in the air that is needed
to burn food energy to stay alive

8 Process of the Respiratory System
1. Air enters into your body through your mouth and your nose.

9 2. The air goes down your trachea to your lungs.

10 3. As you breathe in, your chest gets bigger and your lungs fill with air

11 4. Your trachea divides to form a system of tubes in your lungs
4. Your trachea divides to form a system of tubes in your lungs. These tubes look like the branches of a tree. The branches get smaller and smaller until they end in air sacs.

12 5. All around the air sacs are tiny blood vessels called capillaries.

13 6. The walls of the air sacs and the capillaries are very thin, therefore, oxygen passes easily through these wall. The air moves into the blood. Carbon dioxide moves the other way.
