His life of bravery.

Who is Teddy Roosevelt? What did he do as President? When did he die? How did he become president? Where was he born?

The youngest man to become president of the US was Theodore Roosevelt Jr. or more commonly known as Teddy Roosevelt. Born on the 27 th October 1858, New York, Teddy Roosevelt was an ill child whom had a fascination with animals and later took up boxing as a hobby, after graduating from Harvard, Teddy studied law at Columbia University.Teddy Roosevelt’s presidential career began when he was elected into the New York State Legislature while working as a Civil Service Commissioner. Teddy then became the Governor of New York, moving up in the world he became Vice President, and after the assassination of William McKinley, he became President of the United States. As a soldier in 1898 Teddy joined the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and horseman for the 1 st U.S Volunteer Calvary, the horsemen were the famous ‘Roughriders’, for his service he received the Medal of Honor. During his time as President, Teddy worked to create a powerful US, his foreign policy being from an old African Proverb being: “Speak softly but carry a big stick.” He ships to the four corners of the earth to prove that America was a force to be reckoned with. In 1905, President Theodore helped to resolve the war between the Russia and Japan empires, winning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.Back in America, Teddy tried to create what he described as a “Square Deal” for all Americans, giving each and every citizen the chance to become successful, part of this included regulating large businesses called ‘trusts’, supporting laws for the workers and starting campaigns for looking after the environment. In the epilogue of his presidency, Teddy had a rather odd experience happen to him right before he was about to give a speech. Theodore's opening sentence went like: “Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible.” but his next was quite shocking: “I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot.” So as it turned out an unemployed saloon keeper had shot him twice in the chest, however his 90-minute long speech manuscript had saved him by softening the impact, Clint Eastwood style. He then continued to give a short speech in space of the blood tattered paperback. He later died (60yrs old) on the 6 th January 1919 via a heart attack.
