Why BYOD? Quincy Public Schools is implementing Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) which allows students, with parental permission, to bring internet ready devices to school to enhance the educational process. The District is evaluating BYOD as a means to allow more students access to technology in the classroom. Benefits BYOD include: Students are more engaged in the learning process. Students have more opportunities to personalize learning. Students are better prepared for the workplace and post-secondary education. Students can learn at their own pace in the manner that best suits their learning styles More students have access than when relying strictly on district owned devices. Please click the button to continue:

Quincy Public Schools Acceptable Use Policy The Quincy Public Schools Acceptable Use Policy, also known as the AUP, is a list of things you should and should not do with your device and the Internet. Your Digital Driver’s License, also referred to as DDL, will review the AUP then ask you questions about what you have read. **Reminder: Please make sure a parent is helping you complete your DDL** Please click the button to continue:

I will only use the Internet for educational activities as directed by my teacher. I will use devices responsibly whether they belong to me or to the school. I can communicate using my devices if I am given permission by my teacher and it is an appropriate time to do so. I will tell my teacher if someone is making bad choices while using a device or the Internet. Please click the button to continue:

While using the Internet to do research on a class assignment about Christopher Columbus, Sally looks for pictures of cats playing with yarn. Is Sally allowed to do this? Answer: A. Yes B. No

Incorrect. Remember you are only allowed to use devices and the Internet for educational purposes. Return to the question and try again. Please click the button to continue:

Great job! Sally is not using the Internet to do classwork. She should be using the Internet to research Christopher Columbus. Please click the button to continue:

I will follow school and classroom rules when using my personal device. I will only use the school’s wi-fi connection, not my personal data connection, while at school. I will take responsibility for the safety and security of my device. Please click the button to continue:

Before going to lunch, Johnny puts his tablet in his book bag. This is where Johnny and his parents decided it should be when he is not using it. Is Johnny making a good choice? Answer: A. Yes B. No

Try again. Remember that Johnny and his parents talked about where he should keep his personally owned device when he was not using it. Please click the button to continue:

Awesome! Johnny and his parents decided on a good place to keep his device when he was not using it at school. He chose to follow the decision made with his parents. Please click the button to continue:

I will not post personal or private information about myself or others on the Internet. I will only use my account to logon to access the network or websites. I will not use anyone else’s username or password or share my username or password with anyone else. Please click the button to continue:

Jill cannot find her username and password. She asks Billy if she can use his username and password. Is Jill allowed to do this? Answer: A. Yes B. No

Incorrect. You are only permitted to use your username and password and no one else's. You should never give your username and password to another person. Please click the button to continue:

Correct! Your username and password are personal to you and should never be shared. Please click the button to continue:

I will not use technology to look at, send, copy, or create material that is rude, inappropriate, or meant to hurt someone else’s feelings. I will not take pictures or record audio or video at school or school activities without written permission from my teacher or principal. Posting audio, pictures, or videos of someone else to the Internet without permission is a form of bullying or harassment and violates the law. Please click the button to continue:

Mrs. Smith's class participated in an online discussion about pets. Jill mentioned that gerbils are her favorite pet. Which of the following is an appropriate response according to the AUP? Answer: A.That's dumb! Gerbils are ugly! That's dumb! Gerbils are ugly! B.I disagree because I think dogs are better!I disagree because I think dogs are better! C.Gerbils stink and you do too!Gerbils stink and you do too!

Incorrect. The AUP says you will always be respectful and responsible while on the computer. It also states that you will not create material that is rude, inappropriate, or meant to hurt someone's feelings. Please click the button to continue:

Correct! In an online discussion you should state your opinion in a nice, respectful way, making sure not to intentionally hurt someone's feelings. Please click the button to continue:

I will know where my device is at all times. I will only use my device when my teacher permits it. I am responsible if my device is lost, stolen, damaged or misused by someone else. I will ask parents before downloading apps or software my teacher recommends. I will follow school rules about making phone calls or sending text messages. Please click the button to continue:

Sara's teacher tells her class that they are not permitted to use their device until the entire class is finished with their test. When Sara finishes her test, she pulls out her tablet to read a book. Is Sara violating a rule in the AUP? Answer: A. Yes B. No

Incorrect. Remember that the AUP says you are only allowed to use your device when your teacher permits you to do so. Please click the button to continue:

That's right! Sara should wait until all the students in her class are finished taking the test. Then she can read a book on her tablet if her teacher gives them permission. Please click the button to continue:

Instead of cutting and pasting the article, John rewrote it in his own words. He also listed it as a resource for his report. Did John break a rule in the AUP? Answer: A. Yes B. No

Incorrect. John correctly cited his source and gave credit for the resource he used. Please click the button to continue:

6 Facts for BYOD at Quincy Public Schools: 1.Students are responsible for the security and operation of their device. 2.Students/parents should record and keep the serial number for any BYOD device. 3.QPS is not financially responsible for misuse, costs, damages, or loss of BYOD devices. 4.Technical support of BYOD devices is limited to helping students access the QPS wireless network. 5.Students should bring their devices fully charged; opportunities to charge BYOD devices is limited. 6.Students must follow staff instruction at all times concerning BYOD devices.
