Satellite-based Data Sets for EURO4M Jörg Trentmann, Uwe Pfeifroth, Jennifer Lenhardt, Richard Müller Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD)

Satellite-based data sets to be generated and delivered within EURO4M Surface Solar Radiation Cloud Fraction Surface Albedo Precipitation Integrated Water Vapor All data sets are provided as monthly means in netcdf-format for the European Domain: 20W – 40E, 30N – 75N

Surface Solar Radiation a) Global Radiation (Irradiance) Based on Meteosat 1983 – 2010 0.05 deg spatial resolution Accuracy better than 10 W/m2 Homogeneous after 1995 Applications Climate Monitoring Solar Energy/Agricultural Applications Reanalysis evaluation

Surface Solar Radiation b) Global Radiation (Irradiance) Based on AVHRR 1982 – 2009 0.25 spatial resolution Accuracy better than 10 W/m2 Applications Climate Monitoring Solar Energy/Agricultural Applications Reanalysis Evaluation Data available Results from modified retrieval of solar radiation currently under investigation, Merging of different data sets possible

Cloud Fraction Cloud Fraction Based on AVHRR 1982 – 2009 Applications Climate Monitoring Reanalysis Evaluation Solar Energy Applications etc. Cloud Fraction Based on AVHRR 1982 – 2009 0.25 spatial resolution

Surface Albedo Surface Albedo based on AVHRR 1982 – 2009 0.25 spatial resolution Applications Climate Monitoring Reanalysis Evaluation Snow Monitoring, etc.

Surface Precipitation based on GPCC / HOAPS 3.2 1987 – 2008 0.5 deg spatial resolution Applications Climate Monitoring Reanalysis Evaluation Hydrological Modeling, etc.

EURO4M Precipitation vs. GPCP High spatial resolution GPCP overestimates surface precipitation in Europe

Integrated Water Vapor Based on ATOVS 1999 – 2010 approx. 1 deg resolution Applications Climate Monitoring Reanalysis Evaluation etc.

Summary Selected satellite data sets already available Partly used already for evaluation of EURO4M reanalysis data Surface Solar radiation data set will be further assessed Data available via ftp-server upon request: contact.euro4m@dwd.de
