Character Development: All characters in fiction fit into certain categories according to their roles in the story.

 ROUND  Character has a lot of detail, seems real  Reader can often identify with the character  Character is a main character in the story  Examples: Charlotte Doyle, Peter Parker, Frodo Baggins, Billy Madison

 FLAT  Character has little or no detail, is a stereotype  Reader has trouble caring about character and what happens to him/her in the story  Examples: country bumpkin, con artist, evil stepmother, jock

 DYNAMIC  Character grows and changes in a significant way throughout the story… or changes due to reactions from different events and characters  Examples of changes: changing opinions or values, learning a lesson, becoming more mature, becoming more aware of self or others, changing relationship with another

 STATIC  Character may face exactly the same events and challenges as the dynamic character, but WILL NOT change or grow.  Examples: if the static character s selfish and arrogant at the beginning of the story, he/she will be the same away at the end of the story.

 Characterization: is the use of literary techniques to reveal the nature of a character. A writer may reveal a character in four different ways: ◦ Describe the character’s appearance ◦ Report the character’s speech and behavior ◦ Describe the reactions of the other characters to the individual ◦ Reveal the character’s thoughts and feelings
