Lesson Title: What factors led to the defeat of the Plains Indians? To know what factors led to the end of the Plains Indians’ way of life To understand why we study the American West Skills: explanation, interpreting information, assessing significance

Starter We have now reached the final lesson of our depth study Look back through the notes in your exercise books… What factors do you think led to the defeat of the Plains Indians? Note down at least five factors in the back of your books Remember that no historical event has a single cause, there are always a number of causes that you should consider

Task One Cut out the factor cards from the sheet you have been given On each of the cards, make notes to explain why each of the factors led to the eventual defeat of the Plains Indians Use pages 157 – 158 of your textbook to help you

Task Two Now stick the factor cards in your book under the following headings: Economic Factors Political Factors Military Factors Then, colour code the cards into short-term and long-term causes Use green for short-term causes Use blue for long-term causes Write a paragraph in your book to explain which you think is the most important factor in explaining the defeat of the Plains Indians

Task Three As a class we are going to read through pages 159 – 162 of your textbook Follow the text as we read Why study the American West? What it means to be human Refighting the Battle of the Little Bighorn Getting better at history Learning lessons from history

Plenary Now that we have finished our dept study, you must update the American West self-assessment form you were given at the start of the American West topic What sub topic do you feel the most confident about?
