Chapter 12

Causes of Reduced Visibility Sun glare Dawn/Dusk/Night Fog Rain Snow

Headlights Use low beam lights at all times to enable other drivers to see you High beams used to see further down the road (not used with an oncoming car) Use low beam in bad weather "overdriving your headlights" - stopping distance at night should be within the range of your headlights

Reduced Visibility What should you do if you can't see as far as normal? Slow down/use low beams

Wet Roads When does the rain make the roads the slickest? As the rain begins to fall Believe it or not... You can get better traction in the rain by following in the tire tracks of the vehicle ahead

Deep Water What should you do if you find yourself driving through deep water? Apply light brake pressure which will build up friction on your brakes and help dry your brakes What is "hydroplaning "? When your tires lose contact with the road Drive slowly - don't enter if it's a possibility the water will reach the bottom of your vehicle

Ice Why do bridge surfaces freeze before roads? Cold air circulates above & below the bridge road surface What is "black ice"? Thin sheets of invisible ice

Snow Use low beam headlights when snowing use all season tires for better traction What is "rocking your car"? Repeatedly moving your car forward and backward to help move the car through deep snow

Rear-Wheel Skidding How do you correct a rear-wheel skid? Release your accelerator or brake Steer in the direction your vehicle needs to go Eg. If the treat of your car moves to the right, steer right What is "fishtailing"? The rear of your car continues to slide from side to side

Front Wheel Skid What happens when you are experiencing a front wheel skid? You turn the steering wheel but you car continues to go straight What should you do? Release your brake or accelerator Quickly apply and release brake (if you don't have ABS)

When should you slow down to avoid skidding in a curve? Slow down before the curve What is "controlled braking? Applying pressure off and on to your brakes (most cars have ABS so you don't have to do this)
