What is an EMS? Some FAQ from the website of Q: What is an Environmental Management System? A: An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a natural progression following the progression from an organisation adoption of an environmental policy. It ensures the integration of the responsibilities for environmental initiatives into every day working practices. An EMS provides a systematic process for the identification and management of environmental impacts and potential risks of an organisation. The adoption of a formal environmental management system can have many advantages in commerce such as; the reduced cost of ensuring compliance with regulatory regimes, improved image and stakeholder relationships, cost savings by resource use efficiency. Organisations can choose to implement one of many Environmental Management Systems, including the internationally recognised ISO or EMAS. These international standards provide an opportunity for organisations to gain independent certification for their commitment to reducing their environmental footprint. The advantage of independent certification of the organisations environmental program is that it gives the customers and the public confidence that real steps are being taken to improve the environmental performance. Q: What is the international environmental management system ISO 14001? A: ISO was published in the mid 1990’s and it set out the requirements for an organisations environmental management system. It applies to those environmental aspects over which the organization has control and that it can be expected to have an influence. ISO was designed to enable any organisation to establish an effective standardised management system as a foundation for sound environmental performance and to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and regulations. It does not specify areas of absolute environmental performance, with the exception of compliance with legislation and a commitment to continual improvement. Q: What are the European Environmental Management Regulations, Eco-Management and Audit Scheme or EMAS? A: The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme is a voluntary European Union Scheme. This international EMS aims to encourage evaluation and improvement of environmental performance of the adopting organisation. The EMAS certification aims to recognise and reward organisations that go beyond minimum legal compliance and continuously improve their environmental performance. As requirement of the certification organisation are expected to produce regular environmental reports and public environmental statements on their furthering environmental performance. The ISO-EMAS bridging document The EMAS bridging document allows organisations who have achieved ISO certification to develop progress to EMAS certification. EMAS is a more stringent standard with a more continual process of self assessment and public feedback, and is the preferred international EMS by the Environment Agency. 

What does EMS mean What Does EMS Mean to You? – Quotes from the last Forum…  Oh no, another initiative! bedding good environmental practice in organisation and promoting individual ownership and accountability.  EMS - easier to motivate and monitor staff in small organisations but difficult to manage  economically.  Minimisation of adverse environmental impacts and aspects.  Saving the planet for future generations.  Should be integrated with best value.  One tool in the suite to operate a sustainable development management system. EMS only part of a longer 'Business Excellence' programme - the people are as important as the systems. Probably have 50-60% of what is required difficult to get remaining 40-50%.  EMS is a structured way of encouraging that the policy is being carried out.  Economic, social and environmental efficiencies.  Managing the secondary effects of your activities.  Commitment, hard work, head bashing, engagement.  The means to control and reduce our environmental footprint and act as a focus of best practice to other organisations.
