Social Networking and Use of Personal Devices Practice Integrating Quotations NOTE: Students, do NOT plagiarize from me! You may look at my examples, but do not use them in your own writing!

Step 1 Start by writing a TS that answers a part of your thesis on regarding advantages or disadvantages of Social Networking/PEDs. TS: The advantages of social networking include the potential to quickly fundraise for an important cause and the ability for employees who are looking for work to be discovered by employers.

Step 2 Find a quotation that supports your TS/position Here is a sample: “I couldn’t help recalling the Facebook users who raised $800,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital only last week” (Ham par. 9).

Step 3 In order to integrate this quote (or part of this quote) I will need to look at the context in which the quote is written. Who said it? Why? What does it mean? I need to think in terms of the article as a whole plus the sentences that precede the quote. Who said it? Ham Why? She is explaining one of the benefits of Social Networking. What does it mean? Ham had been pondering the idea that even though social technologies feel like they are “all about you,” in reality they are not.

Step 4 Now I can integrate the quotation (or part of it) by paraphrasing what came before it. Here’s the entire quote again: “I couldn’t help recalling the Facebook users who raised $800,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital only last week” (Ham par. 9). Integrated Quote/CD: While social networking sometimes seems like a resource devoted to narcissists, it’s important to remember the positives, such as when “Facebook users [quickly] raised $800,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital” (Ham Par. 9).

Step 5 Make sure it proves your TS (change your TS if needed) + add insightful commentary TS: The advantages of social networking include the potential to quickly fundraise for an important cause and the ability for employees who are looking for work to be discovered by employers. CD: While social networking sometimes seems like a resource devoted to narcissists, it’s important to remember the positives, such as when “Facebook users [quickly] raised $800,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital” (Ham par. 9). CM: (This shows that) Social Networking can be used for the benefit of society when people use it as a tool to work together to support a common cause.

Step 6 Do it again. Find a second quotation (or combine two!) that supports your TS (in this case, I still need to support the second part of my TS regarding recruiters) and integrate it in the same way. CD options: – “Social networks are viewed by corporations as a means to recruit both passive and active candidates in a personal yet professional way” (Schawbel par. 3). – “increase your chance of getting hired” (Schawbel par. 6). – “92% of employers are using or planning to use social networks for recruiting this year” (Schawbel par. 2). – “Four out of five recruiters liked to see memberships and affiliations with professional organizations on a candidate’s profile, and another 66% react positively when a profile mentions volunteerism efforts” (Schawbel par. 5).

Step 7 Pull it all together in a well-developed Body Paragraph:

The advantages of social networking include the potential to quickly fundraise for an important cause and the ability for employees who are looking for work to be discovered by employers. While social networking sometimes seems like a resource devoted to narcissists, it’s important to remember the positives, such as when “Facebook users [quickly] raised $800,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital” (Ham par. 9). Social Networking can be used for the benefit of society when people use it as a tool to work together to support a common cause. An additional benefit of social networking is for those looking for employment. In today’s world, “social networks are viewed by corporations as a means to recruit both passive and active candidates” (Schawbel par. 3). For job-seekers, this is good news. They can find out about job opportunities quickly and even be directly recruited by employers looking to hire new candidates. Such quick and easy access to one another, when used in such positive ways, are truly helpful advantages of social networking.
