2.8 Interpreting Meanings (A story of revenge) Go to page 114 and interpret the quotes about revenge. Re-create the chart in your spiral so you have sufficient space to address each quote. Then decide if you agree or disagree with the statements and why. HW: finish 2.8 (quotation chart in text or in spiral) and Check Your Understanding in your spiral

2.8 Check your Understanding 1 After reading and interpreting the quotations about revenge, note which have striking imagery, and consider how the imagery helps you understand the meaning of the quote. Choose your favorite quote from above and explain how you might use it as the basis for the conflict of a story between two characters.

Catacombs and Carnival In the informational text on page 115, notice how context provides clues to the meaning of unfamiliar words. Circle all the words in italics; then defuse the meaning by underlining the words and phrases that suggest the meaning. Use a dictionary to find the meanings of any words you do not know after diffusing the text.

Check your Understanding 2 (in spiral) Based on the information in this text, predict three elements that will probably be part of the setting of “The Cask of Amontillado.” EA 2 Practice: Imagine that you are setting a story in a catacomb. Write a story starter describing the setting and introduce a character. Be sure to: Use figurative language and imagery to create a mood of suspense, fear, or terror. Use sentence structure effectively to create the mood you want. Use specific details to describe the setting and the character.

Homework: Read the instructions on page 114, fill out the chart (follow directions) and finish the Check Your Understanding on page 114 in your spiral. Next, read the instructions on page 115. This provides you with background information to help you understand the some of the background and vocabulary for the short story we are about to read in 2.9 (The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe). Read the informational text "Catacombs and Carnival." Circle all the words in italics then diffuse the meaning by underlining the words and phrases that suggests the meaning of the word (context). Use a dictionary to find the meaning of any words you do not know after diffusing the text. Next, in your spiral complete the Check Your Understanding by following the instructions provided on page 115 AND complete the Writing Prompt in your spiral by following the instructions on page 115. Due Thursday!
