Asia Source: Contours of the World Economy AD, Angus Madison, 2007 USA Europe The World is changing – per cent of world GDP for Africa, Asia, Europe, USA Africa

Partnerships for sustainable growth and jobs? More Aid? –The 0.7% target of aid to Gross National Income –The 20% and the 2% club –Blending grant and loan funds for greater impact Beyond Aid –Policy Coherence for Development –Trade, finance, food security, migration, and security The missing global challenges –infrastructure – not just social but also economic –Climate change – how can we get low-carbon growth? –Food security and energy security –Inequality – poor in middle-income countries The new policy space –Post-crisis politics and post-crisis economics –Exploit the varieties of experience –No (international) best practice

The need for engagement South Africa –4%-5% is not enough –How do you raise the (sustainable) growth rate? –The role of Local Economic Development The Region –Ensuring there are something to trade – growth again –Regional economic cooperation Global –From G8 to G20 –But need for other engagements – BRICS, Asia, Europe, US –Aid Effectiveness - Busan, South Korea –Climate change conference (COP17) – Durban, South Africa –UN MDG Conference 2013

Conclusion MDGs have been and are fulfilling a unique advocacy and mobilising role But they are not everything –Whole areas of the economy missing – focus on social –Cannot rely on just a few high-level indicators –Need to adapt to country context But more deeply a changing world calls for changing response Changing response, nationally, regionally, and globally –MDG+ or beyond the MDGs… But prepare yourself for the debate as we get closer to 2015

Can we see Africa’s future in South Korea?
