I want to be able to mentor and advise They need quality SEN materials How can I minimise supply costs? Running training days is expensive I have limited time I need a good work/life balance How can I train my school work force? Meeting needs

I can manage this online Self-paced learning I can train more people Short face to face sessions Flexibility of access Every school has online computers What does leading an online course offer me? Opportunities

Advantages of e-learning ð ‘Just in Time’ learning that responds to immediate needs ð Flexibility of access ð The opportunity to collaborate with others dealing with similar issues ð Immediate access to advice and support through forums and ð Materials presented to respond to different learning styles ð Participants can work at their own pace

What courses are available? 2 open access courses ð SEN Code of Practice ð Working in Partnership with Parents (NPPN) 7 courses that need a tutor ð ASD (linked to the IDP) ð Behaviour (linked to SEAL) ð Dyslexia ð Hearing Impairment ð Motor coordination needs ð Speech, language and communication needs (Linked to IDP) ð Visual Impairment

Who are the courses for? ð Teaching assistants supporting statemented children ð General teaching assistants ð Mainstream teachers ð Special School staff ð Parents ð Staff in resource bases

Case studies ð Several films for each child ð Babies through to university ð Mainstream, resource base, special school ð Interviews with pupils ð Interview with parents ð Interviews with professionals ð All subtitled

Participant Feedback There is a wealth of practical advice and the list of printable resources is a great idea, comprehensive and very useful to hand to other members of staff as well This course has been like a manual to me. I've been dipping into it so often for strategies to use. It has helped me to realise how difficult it is for hearing impaired children to acquire and use new vocabulary

Becoming a tutor? You must first access the course as a participant before you become a tutor

Participant role ð Join a tutor training cohort ð Get familiar with content and navigation ð See the scope of the course ð Experience first hand how the forums work ð Consider your audience and how they will respond ð Get a sense of the level of the course ð Experience e-learning ð Plan how you will deliver the training ð Be prepared

Tutor role ð Set up your own cohort ð Clear time frame ð Face to face sessions ð Regularly use the communication tools ð Book time to monitor and respond to your cohort ð Aim for high completion rates ð Utilise the progress tools to pass students and read feedback ð Plan your next cohort (max of 25 participants)

Delivery model Courses advertised through school bulletins and courses brochures. Participants apply and are pre-registered by tutor. Face to Face 1 Given introduction to the course and an overview of specific features of the e- learning experience. Practical teaching session Face to Face 2 Participants have completed the Understanding Section of the course. Practical teaching session. Advice towards goal setting Face to Face 3 Practical teaching session. Further discussions. Advice about writing interventions and completing the course Gloucestershire Model

Next steps Familiarise yourself by: ð Registering and joining the course you will lead ð Looking at each section of the course and the “site map” to get an overview ð Dipping into the forum and introduce yourself and reply to another participant Think about: ð Who, where, when, how many in your group ð How many face to face sessions and where ð Time frame for completing ð Whether you charge for the courses ð How to ensure staff are given non-contact time to access the courses ð Investigate available IT facilities for induction sessions
