Read The Irony of What Works (2 minutes) Hands Up – Pair Up (someone near you) Each of you answer, “What was an A-Ha moment or interesting to you after reading this section?” Goes first: Taller, each have one minute to share

Procedures  Practicing procedures saves time! Doug McCurry  Champion teachers maintain high expectations – it’s NOT okay NOT to try.  Practice and praise perseverance  Math practice standard #1  “You don’t have to get the answers right in my class, but you will be expected to try. I will see you [later] to discuss this.”  Use NO Opt Out with the positive expectation that they will try.  You believe in their ability to answer, you EXPECT it.  Students’ hearing themselves succeed and get the answers right is important.

When you are done, complete the pre-assessment on your study guide handout. 4 Minutes Pre-Assessment Proficiency Comfort & Confidence I am brand new to No Opt Out... I’m in the planning and practice stage, though I haven’t tried it yet in class... I’m beginning to try No Opt Out in my classroom... I use No Opt Out regularly and excited to try it.... but know that with more practice I’ll make it work.... and love how it basically works.... and am adding my own distinctive touch.... and undecided about my ability to pull it off.... because I still have questions about how to do it right.... with mixed results I need to evaluate.... but I may be overusing it.... and not at all sure it’s for me.... because, frankly, I still have serious doubts.... but it doesn’t seem to work or suit me.... but when class isn’t going well, I do it poorly and it doesn’t help.

A Fundamental process of school: get it wrong; then, get it right! The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing! Think sheet: “I made a mistake. I thought about it. I took my time to learn from my mistakes. Here’s what I did:” Timely, productive feedback for students. A chance to learn from mistakes – plus the ability and responsibility to identify the right answer, safely.
