Studentdocs.andover.edu Apollo Athena Facultydocs.andover.edu Staffdocs.andover.edu oldpanet.andover.edu Students OnlyTeaching Faculty Teaching Shares Staff Admin Faculty Staff/Admin Shares All academy servers and desktops become a member of the domain. We have ~58 servers within the domain. Exchange2Exchange1 mail.andover.edu Bboardapp1 panet.andover.edu ANDOVER Storage Servers

Active Directory Service Profile   Your username and password   Your documents – My Documents folder   Your desktop preferences   Your access rights.

Computers that participate in the domain When an academy owned computer is directly connected to the network (dorm, office, other) it will participate fully with the domain. We strongly recommend that you log into the network on a weekly basis so the following important functions can occur:   Synchronization of My Documents folder and Desktop to one of the document servers   Automatic Windows Updates   Automatic Software Updates and Distribution

Protected Computers What does it mean to me?   When an academy owned computer is in the protected state, the user is unable to install applications or make system level changes without the services of Desktop Support. What is the benefit?   Malware (viruses, spyware, adware) finds it ’ s way onto your computer by using your rights. If you have the rights to install applications, the malware uses your writes to install itself and create havoc. What if I want my computer released from the protective state?   There is a policy in place that allows us to give full administrator privileges to the computer with a signed form called Academic Department Agreement for Unprotected Computers (department chair ’ s approval is required).

Profile Types We use 3 types of profiles here on campus: Folder Redirects Used for students and some faculty, all docs stored ONLY on the server Folder Redirection with Offline files Used for faculty who have a laptop that has offline files set up, (while off line your files are available) Roaming All staff and a small number of administrative faculty (entire profile is on any computer they use as well as server)

Storage Services On the Domain each server has folders for its constituents. Each person has at least 2 folders that they have access to:   H – Home (My Documents)   S – Share (Department Documents)

Saving to the Storage Servers ANDOVER DOMAIN By saving to the My Documents folder on any academy owned, Windows computer, directly connected to the network Your documents will be saved to the server on Logout!

While using your academy procured laptop on the network, the My Documents folder synchronizes once during LOGIN and again during LOGOUT Synchronization - Backup Redirect Profiles with Offline Files

While you are using a private Internet connection (i.e. Comcast or DSL), the synchronization mechanism will continue to remind that it cannot find the network. This is just a reminder, but the files are being stored to the laptop and will synchronize the next time you attach to the academy network. Synchronization Reminders Redirect Profiles with Offline Files

SHORT and CONCISE – Name your file so that it is easy to find, but not too lengthy a name to cause issues. NO SPECIAL CHARACTERS – Never use a slash or most characters that are available by using the shift key on the keyboard, even spaces can cause lengthy unnecessary file names (especially when used on the Web). Exception is underscore. ORGANIZE YOUR DOCUMENTS – Use folders to organize your documents within the storage areas you have access to. Great Examples: Tests  WW2  Chap2.doc Homework  MiddleEast  IraqHussein.jpg File Names and Management File Naming is of significant importance!

Laptop Use 1. 1.Logout of your Desktop machine 2. 2.Login on the laptop, while connected to the academy network 3. 3.Logout of the laptop, while connected to the academy network 4. 4.Leave for your destination with your laptop containing an up-to-date copy of your documents.

Wireless Networking Your laptop is setup to automatically participate in the PAWireless network. For optimal performance while synchronizing, you may want to login and synchronize while physically attached to the network. Once the computer is logged in, you can detach the network cord and travel around the building. You will notice that the strength of the wireless signal will vary from one location to another. The signal indicator below will occasionally pop up to give you signal strength updates. You can also mouse over the indicator, in the bottom right corner of our computer screen, for this information.

Final Tidbits 1. 1.You’re My Documents folder has a quota of 500 MB of space Your department share has a quota of ~1 gig 3. 3.Always log out of your computer before you leave it. Don’t log onto multiple computers that are connected to the academy network – this will cause profile issues Before a break/vacation login and logout while on the academy network – to back up your documents.
