MPEG4/IP TELEVISION Objectives: –Making TV and Radio flux « routable » –Making bandwidth compatible with telecommunication networks –Making the flux « interactive » –Assuring the change of the transportation support without any loss –A unique flux - A multiplication of the possibilities –An internationally developed and accepted codec ISO (1998) –A utility normilized environment (program guide) –Exploitation costs at max equal as today ’s –A quality at least equal as known today (TPS/CANAL/DVD)

MPEG2 - MPEG4 Television Canal/TPS Broadcast mode television DVB standard (Digital Vidéo Broadcast) MPEG2 ISO standard Bandwidth 4 to 8 Mbits per channel (D1) No interactivity possible Difficult to store numerical data No « on demand » possibility No liaison with the Internet world No liaison with the data-processing world No liaison with ADSL (bandwidth between 4-6 Mbits) IP Television Broadcast mode for television/multicast/on demand Norm DVB / IP (European Infrastructure) Norm MPEG4 ISO Bandwidth 512 to 1,5 Mbits (D1 Full Screen) IP Interactive (guide of Pg and Java) Storage of numerical data « On demand » through a server IP mode diffusion on the ethernet Player on PC/MAC or TV or embedded Links to ADSL, TNT and TNT mobile

Technical contraints Guarantee a contineous 2 Mbits bandwidth Guarantee this bandwidth on all clients sites simultaneous Guarantee acces to at least 30 TV channels A management of the IP multicast Transportation insurance of at least to (ATM ’s necessity)

The chain for delivering the signal The signal will be routed from any point per satellite (garanteed bandwidth), before arriving on the DSLAM for use of broadcast diffusion in IP/DVB mode. Mux DVB Gateway Thales opale Hub 100 Mbits Routeur Infosat / Cryptage trame IP (P4 2 Ethernet) Encoder Live MPEG4 Envivio (P4 bi-pro full FullD1) Video source Satellite AB2 SATBOX multicast DSLAM PC / Set-top-box MPEG4 ISO

The signals arrival on the DSLAM DSLAM duplication of the trames Commut ATM SATBOX 38 Mbits multicast (IGMP) Client PC/ STB MPEG4 (guaranteed bandwidth)

Architectural advantages DSLAM ’s are automatically duplicating the multicast trames The SATBOX manages the subscriptions for the operators The IGMP trames pass on to the SATBOX The UDP / TCP trames pass on to the ATM commutation No modifications are to be made to the ATM architecture Bandwidth garanteed by satellite for audio-visual content Bandwidth garanteed between the DSLAM and the end user « On demand » possible trhough storage on the SATBOX Zapping effectuated at the SATBOX level The D1 flux bandwidth (720x576) is inferieur than 1,5 Mbits. Interactivity assured by a TCP/IP channel in IP mode

Economical advantages Easy to install and activate Broadcasting a TV channel at less than Euro a year Economical model audiovisual compatible (mass diffusion) Justified increase of the ADSL monthly subscription fee New services provided by the telecom operators Finally an interactive television. MPEG4 can integrate HTML links Real effective solution for E commerce (answering mode) No important investments per DSLAM (<6000 Euro per 25 TV channels) No new infrastructure to be built (Satellite infrastructure) Free player for PC and MAC (MPEG4 ISO)
