Repeated Addition Or Adding up

Repeated addition is another strategy to use when solving a multiplication problem.

Step 1 when Adding up! Read your multiplication sentence. 5 x 3 = ? 5 groups of three =? Three five times equals what?

Write out your groups of three 5 times. 3 3 3 3 3 Step 2 Write out your groups of three 5 times. 3 3 3 3 3 Or

3- five times Looks like……. 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3=?

Step 3 Add the threes together 3 plus 3 = 6 6 plus 3= 9 9 plus 3= 12

Step 4 Therefore…. 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3=15

Step 1 in Repeated Addition Read your multiplication sentence. 6 x 2 = ? six groups of 2 =? Two six times equals what?

Step 2 This time write your groups in addition problems. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 Count the number of times you added 2

Step 3 Circle your all the 2s. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 You should have circled six 2s or SIX sets of 2!

Step 4 Add up by repeating the 2 for six times. 2 4 6 8 10 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 4 6 8 10 12 Draw an arrow each time showing your next step.

Step 5 Therefore…. 2 six times or 6 x 2 = 12

Try using Repeated Addition to solve the following problems. 2 x 4 = ? 3 x 6= ? 4 x 4= ? 8 x 3 = ? 6 x 6= ? 5 x 7= ?
