The Utility View: Electrical Vehicle Impact IEEE CCW October 25, 2010

Dimensions of the PHEV/EV Problem Utility Perspective Why is This Such a Difficult Problem? – Incremental Load of Known Characteristics – Load Falls in Significant Residential Level – Variability in Growth Penetrations – Mobile Connection Characteristics – Charger Platforms will allow Control of Load Variability/Predictability is the Key Issue

The Utility Application Challenge Load Variability Control – Relatively Simple Application Load Mobility – Requires Dynamic Circuit Knowledge Never Delivered to any Significant Level of Scale Before Dynamic Billing Capability – Dynamic Rates Applied to the Device Level – Loads Addressed at the Device Level – Cell Phone Level Back Office Billing of PHEV/EV Loads

The generators in the microgrid may be fuel cells, reciprocating engines, solar power, wind or any of a number of alternate power sources. A microgrid may take the form of shopping center, industrial park or college campus. To the utility, a microgrid is an electrical load that can be controlled in magnitude.
